Daisy woke up from her nap to the sound of fighting. She groaned softly, and rolling onto her side, she pushed her heavily pregnant body up off the bed. Daisy lurched to her feet, her swollen belly robbing her of her grace. Taking a deep breath to center herself, she slowly counted to ten in both Italian and German, before leaving the relative peace and quiet of her bedroom.

She calmly walked down the hall to the den, where the brothers Beilschmidt stood, arguing with each other. Neither one seemed to notice her presence as she walked past them to Gilbert’s iPod stereo system. Daisy turned the music down low. That seemed to get the brothers’ attention, as they turned to face her.

“Alrighty!” she said. “I’ve had enough of your nonsense, Gilbert Beilschmidt! I don’t care if it is Henry Rollins’ birthday! That’s no excuse to play music at decibels that will make a normal person’s ears bleed!” Daisy glared at him.

Gilbert blinked. “Yes, Ma’am!” he said. “Sorry, Daisy.” He looked properly contrite.

“Okay.” When Daisy caught her husband smirking, she pointed her finger at him. “Ludwig Beilschmidt! Just because your brother likes loud music and you don’t, doesn’t give you the right to dictate to him what he can and cannot listen to; understood?” She glared at him.

Ludwig nodded.

“Good. Now are you two done acting like a bunch of two year olds? Hmmm?” Daisy folded her arms across her chest.

“Yes, Ma’am,” the brothers mumbled.

“I can’t hear you!”

“Yes, Ma’am!” They stood at attention much to Daisy’s amusement.

“Good! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to finish my nap!” Daisy turned on her heel and waddled out of the room. “And you two had better behave or else!”

The brothers nodded. They watched her go. When Gilbert judged her to be out of earshot, he turned to Ludwig and said, “Did she just use the ‘mom voice’ on us?”

“Yeah…” Ludwig blinked. He swelled with pride at how good a mother Daisy would be when the baby was born.

“You know, West, the sick thing is, it worked,” Gilbert smirked.

“You’re right!”

“You know it!”

The two of them walked over to the sofa and sat. Grabbing the remote, Ludwig switched on the TV. He channel surfed until he found a program that he and his brother could agree on. They watched TV in companionable silence, their argument long forgotten.

When Daisy woke up an hour later, she smiled at the sight that greeted her when she entered the den. Both brothers were enjoying a show about dogs, quietly and calmly, compared to earlier. She patted her swollen belly. “Promise me, you’ll be more mature than your father and uncle, okay?” The baby chose that moment to move and she laughed softly to herself as she came over and sat down to watch the end of the show.
