Inge got up at what she liked to call “the butt crack of dawn,” did her morning routine, and went downstairs to the kitchen. There, she put on a pot of coffee to help her wake up as it was around four in the morning. Her husband thought she was nuts, but Inge liked to get up early and go outside to hear the first birds sing.
She poured herself a cup of coffee, before going to get her hat and coat. Dressed for the cool morning air, Inge grabbed her coffee and went outside onto the back deck. She stood there, watching as the sky slowly brightened. It was then that she heard it, the first songs of the morning. The funny thing was, Inge was not much of a bird watcher, so she had no idea if she was listening to a chaffinch or chickadee. All that mattered was hearing the song itself.
So as the morning brightened, the birdsong grew louder and more diverse as more and more birds joined in. By the time her coffee was finished, the birds pretty much were too, or it always seemed that way as the sound of a neighborhood waking up drowned out the pleasant bird calls. Inge went inside. It was time to go back to bed and catch a few z’s, before starting her day.
