Author’s notes: I have chosen to use the Indian word “memsahib” to refer to an Englishwoman during one scene to emphasize their foreignness to the Indian population, since not many of them followed their husbands to Indian during their service there. Because of that and the fact that they tended not to mix too much with the local population, there’s an air of ‘mystery” surrounding them. It’s also a term of respect like its male counterpart, “sahib;” kind of the Indian equivalent of saying “sir” or “madam.” A “sepoy” is an Indian in the British army with a rank of infantry private. The rank sepoy is still used today in the armies of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. A “tonga” is a light two-wheeled vehicle for two or four persons drawn by a horse.

Special thanks to my beta, Jen, for the awesome title!
