Author’s note: The title is play on Led Zeppelin’s album, song, and concert film “The Song Remains the Same.” Snippets of the songs, “Going To California” and “The Immigrant’s Song,” both written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, are found below.

Germany sat as his desk in the study, working on his presentation for next World 8 meeting. He paused, looking over at the small statue of the goddess Fortuna that Italy had given him after WWII when he was feeling very lonely and friendless. Fortune favors the brave… he remembered his friend telling him at the time and Germany took those words to heart. He credited them and Italy’s undying friendship as a major factor in turning things around to become a major world power again. Not only that, but as luck would have it, his brother was reunited with him and life was a lot less lonely. Picking up his pen, he set to work on his speech about strengthening the euro by building the economy through tourism.

Prussia, who had been listening to some music England had given him, headed towards the study to continue cleaning the house. Having heard the playlist numerous times since England gave him the mp3s, Prussia knew the words to several of the songs. One in particular was a favorite of his and Prussia liked to belt it out whenever it came on. So as he neared the study, he sang in that loud way that only people, who can’t hear themselves and want to be heard, sing. He had just finished singing the bridge when he entered the study, dust rag in hand.

“Aaaah… ah! We come from the land of the ice and snow… From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. How soft your fields so green… can whisper tales of gore… Of how we calmed the tides of war… We are your overlords…” He drew out the last note.

Germany looked up. “Are you kidding me? Brüder, go make some noise elsewhere! Brüder? Prussia!!”

Prussia completely ignored him as he puttered around the room, tidying things up and dusting. By now that song had finished and next one had started. Prussia continued to sing along in raspy tenor with Robert Plant while he worked. As he had turned his iPod up as loud as he could without hurting his ears, he failed to hear his brother’s pleas to be quiet as he sang Going to California.

“Spent my days with a woman unkind… Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine… Made up my mind to make a new start… Going to California with an aching in my heart… Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair…. Took my chances on a big jet plane… Never let them tell you that they're all the same….The sea was red- What do you want?” Prussia took the earbuds out of his ears when he noticed Germany trying to get his attention.

“Can’t you do that somewhere else? I’m trying to work.”

“Oh… sorry.”

“It’s okay.” Germany went back to work, wincing as Prussia sang when he left the room.

“Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems….”
