Alexander Saint-Germaine walked arm in arm with the former kitten, Pashmina, who was now his “mistress.” They came to Madrona to enjoy Sovereignty Days and were browsing the stalls in the marketplace. The walkway was lined with trestle tables displaying mostly pies and other assorted baked good. Pashmina had a basket on his free arm that was filled with half a dozen sweet rolls and a pot of blackberry jam. They were heading over to a group of tables where the head of the Queen’s kitchen and few senior staff members where tasting some pies. There was a contest going on to see who would win the prestigious Queen’s award for best pie and the men, judging the completion, had been stopping at each bakery table for a small slice of pie. Just then, a commotion broke out, and a small furry bullet ran past.
Pashmina laughed.
“What’s so funny?” Alex asked as he paid for a jar of honey.
“That!” Pashmina pointed at the dog that ran past, a pie tin in its mouth. “The little thief!”
Alex looked over at the furry blur that sped by and laughed. “That’s either got to be the best pie ever, or the worst!”
“I know!” Pashmina chortled. “I’m so glad we came this year. It was worth it just to see that!” He giggled and wiped at the tears that ran down his cheeks at the fat man, who chased after the dog, like a great lumbering white bear. “Go, little pie-thief!!”
“Come, my Dear, let’s go.” Alex took his beloved by the arm, the dog and the pie-man forgotten as things settled down.
“Your Alexness?” Pashmina said impishly, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
“What is it, my Dear?”
“Can we,” Pashmina giggled, “get some pie?”
Alex snorted in amusement. “If you must…”
“I do!” Pashmina smiled at him.
“Then pie it is,” Alex said as the two of made their way over to the tables laden with pies.
