They celebrated Yule by combining the old ways and the new with a touch of Saturnalia thrown in for good measure. Which basically meant Luigi thought every holiday needed an orgy as part of its celebration; no matter how many times Wolfgang explained that orgies had nothing to do with said holiday. Things carried on like that until Luigi’s wife left him. He then packed up his kids and moved to America. Wolfgang was to follow, two years later, when his wife became ill. And while there were not any orgies, they still celebrated as they had had with a mix of pagan and Christian ideals.

This was to be their first Yule without the girls as Luigi called them, Wolfgang’s wife having passed away in the spring, and Luigi’s girlfriend deciding she did not want to be a mother to all those kids. Luigi thought it would be a good idea for the little ones to see the mall Santa and the two men took their passel of kids to the mall. Even though he was struggling with two toddlers, Luigi flirted with the moms waiting in line while Wolfgang quietly waited quietly, thankful that his eldest, Bernd was behaving for a change. His youngest, Dieter, who everyone called Didi, dozed in his arms. When they reached the “Elves” Luigi explained that they wanted pictures of the kids alone with Santa as well as together. An unusual request, but one that was easily granted thanks to Luigi’s flirtation. Cesare cried while little Tino calmly sat on Santa’s lap, until Santa gave him a candy cane. After Luigi collected his kids, Wolfgang brought his over to visit Santa.

Bernd sat there until Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas. “I want my Mutti!” the four year old said.

“Is Mommy working?” Santa asked.

Bernd shook his head. “She’s in heaven and I want her back!!”

“Bernd!” Wolfgang said.

“It’s okay,” Santa said to him. Focusing his attention on Bernd, he said, “I’m sorry, I can’t bring her back. Aren’t there any toys you want?”

“No!” Bernd pouted. “I just want my Mutti!” he wailed, prompting his little brother to start crying.

Wolfgang, never one for creating a scene, collected his kids after their picture was taken. He shushed Didi, who quickly calmed down. Bernd on the other hand, decided to have a meltdown of epic proportions. Small for his age, he was dragged, kicking and screaming from the mall amid the glares and sympathetic glances of the other shoppers. He continued his tantrum in the car and stopped at home when he cried himself to sleep.

“Here,” Luigi said as he sat down next to Wolfgang on the sofa and him a beer. “He didn’t do it on purpose, Wolfie; the kid just misses his mommy. Hell, Cesare still cries for his mother and Sera. It’s what kids do.” He sipped his beer.

“I know.” Wolfgang rubbed the tension away in his forehead, before sipping his beer. “This is so hard.” He sighed. “I miss her too.”

“I know, but we need to make things as normal as possible. Maybe we should have a party for the kids. We can invite the twins Bernd likes to play with and maybe a few of the kids they like to play with from daycare. You can bake cookies.” Luigi grinned. “And we can order a pizza or two; take them outside to sing to the trees, you know how much our kids like that.”

“Yeah…”

“I know you miss her, hell I do too. Sure, it’ll be hard, but it’ll get better. You’ll see.”

“I hope so.”

Luigi held out his beer bottle. Wolfgang shook his head, but still clinked his against it.

“Happy Yule, Wolfie.”

The ghost of a smile tugged at Wolfgang’s lips. “Io Saturnalia.”

Luigi laughed. “That’s the spirit! So we’ll throw the kids a Yule party?”

Wolfgang nodded. “Yeah.” he drank his beer while his friend planned the party. As much as he did not feel like celebrating, Luigi’s enthusiasm was contagious and he helped him plan a small party for the kids.

I feel so sorry for that poor Santa. He's just trying to get through the day without catching the plague or drinking on his break and he had to go and step in it like that.

Yeah. Being a Mall Santa has got to be a really tough job!
