Author: kira
Word Count: 1001
World: Roseburg
Main Characters: Gita Chandrasekhar, Storm Chaser (Dean Dick)

Summary: While on her way home from the Spice Shop, Gita meets an Elf…
Author’s notes: In Madrona they are a few groups of people who are named after legendary as well as mythological people. Elves and the Amazons are two such people. Elves live in the northwest part of Madrona; they live off the land like Native Americans and other indigenous people. They’re thought to be the descendants of hippies and other free spirits.
Author’s notes 2: Special thanks to kat for letting me borrow Storm Chaser… and also for pinking this.
Author’s notes 3: This was written in response to Brownie’s Halloween challenge; the prompt is “scream.”

Gita, startled, let out a loud piercing scream. Frightened, she backed away from the young man, who seemed to have come out of nowhere, that stood before her. She was just as wild-eyed as he was and as she took a deep breath to scream again, he quickly reached out, covering her mouth with his hand.

“Sssh…” Storm Chaser said as she tried to bite him and get away. He held her wrist and wished she would stop struggling. All he wanted was to find the uncle no one would talk about. He had risked his mother’s ire just to come this far and the last thing he wanted was to go home without seeing him.

Gita refused to look him in the eye; instead she looked down at the wrist he was holding. She tried to pull away, but he was too strong. Gita was close to tears and in a panic as she was sure he meant to do her harm.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he said softly as if hearing her thoughts. “I just want to ask you something, okay?”

She looked up and nodded as best as she could as his hand was still clamped tightly around her mouth. She stared at him, thinking there was something about him that was vaguely familiar, despite being afraid of him. He looked no older than her seventeen summers, and he had the same freckled complexion as her Uncle Luke, only he was a bit darker like her family. He had hazel eyes and similar nose too. While he wore his curly hair tied back, it reminded her of her uncle’s, although it was a darker and more like brown with reddish highlights as if he colored it with henna.

“There’s another man like me, an Elf, and I heard he lived in a big village with people called Spicelanders or Spicetraders… or something like that.” He smiled wryly at her. “Have you seen him?”

Gita frowned. When he let go of her mouth, she nodded. “What do you want with him?” she said, her curiosity getting the better of her.

It was his turn to frown. “I’m just looking for him.” Storm Chaser let go of her wrist.

“And…?” Gita was still afraid, but he had not hurt her aside from squeezing her wrist too much. She rubbed it.

“And I want to see him. I have something I want to ask him.” He felt bad about hurting her, but being as impulsive as his uncle, he grabbed her without thinking. When she struggled, he held on tighter.

“Oh.” Gita inched away from him. She still was not sure if he meant to do her any harm; although, she was relieved he had no idea she was carrying half the day’s take from the spice shop home to her parents. She usually traveled with her younger sister, Jyoti, but her sister was home sick. It was not a far walk and since she and her sister always brought their uncles’ lunch to the shop, no one in town paid them much attention.

“So have you seen him?” Storm Chaser mentally kicked himself, as he sounded more eager for news than he wanted to.

Gita shook her head. There was no way she was going to tell him about her uncle. “Can I go now?”

The Elf nodded. “If you see him, tell him Lola Dick still worries about him.”

“Lola Dick?” Gita frowned. Her uncle’s last name was Dick and for one horrible moment, she wondered if that woman was her uncle’s wife and this Elf was his son as he reminded her of her uncle. She knew her Uncle Shankar loved her Uncle Luke the way her parents loved each other and if her uncle was married, it would break other uncle’s heart. She felt it would be better if no one found out about this, especially her Uncle Shankar.

He nodded. “She’s my mother. I’m Dean Dick, by the way.” He smiled at her.

Gita felt her cheeks heating up as he did have a nice smile, but then it hit her that he could really be her cousin. Despite her doubts and misgivings, she said, “I’m Isvargita Chandrasekhar and I really must be going. My parents will be worried about me as I’m a bit late getting home.” She turned to go.

“Wait! I can walk you home…”

“That’s okay. I’ll be fine,” she said over her shoulder. “Perhaps we’ll meet again, Master Dick.”

“I’d like that Miss Isa…” he mangled her name.

Gita laughed. “Everyone calls me ‘Gita.’ I really must be going. Bye!” And with that she hurried off.

Storm Chaser stood there, watching her go, before he turned and headed off back the way he came. He too had parents who would be worried about him, especially since it took him about two weeks to get to the large village on the edge of the woods. He knew when he got home his mother would be furious with him and he dreaded returning as she could live up to her name, Fierce like Panther, when angry. He hoped his father would help smooth things out between them, until he realized his mother had probably tracked him here.

He also hoped the girl would be able to find his wayward uncle and let him know that he had family that missed him and still cared about him. All the tales he had heard about him from Black Dog, and occasionally Rabbit, made him really want to meet the man, his mother insisted had died before he was born. But Storm Chaser had the feeling she was wrong and that his uncle was still alive and living in the large village with the Spice-people just like Black Dog said he was. Storm Chaser wanted to know why he had left, amongst other things, and he hoped to find some answers to his questions that no one at home seemed able to give him.
