Bernd and Amber sat in the darkened movie theater, watching Rise of the Guardians with little Fritz. Bernd’s hair, which he normally dyed a bright pink, had faded to its normal white blond. Unable to find the color he liked, he tried a different brand, which was lighter than he liked, plus it washed out rather quickly. That combined with his boyish looks to make him resemble the character Jack Frost in the movie. He had gotten several looks from parents and kids alike when in line to buy their tickets, but paid little attention to it, as he was used to being stared at thanks to his pink hair.
Now as they watched the movie, he and Amber exchanged the odd look or two, while Fritz watched the movie. He also stole the odd look at his father as in his mind Jack Frost and Vati were one and the same. When the movie ended, Fritz saw that the other kids that were sitting near them were staring at his father. A couple of preteen girls giggled as they filed past them, especially when Bernd turned his head to look at them and smiled. Fritz looked up at him amazed. That simple act, something his father did all the time, cemented in Fritz’s head that he really was a Guardian. He could not wait to get home so he could ask him to make it snow.
“Did you like the movie, Fiete?” Amber asked as they drove home.
Fritz nodded.
“We can’t hear you, Fritz,” Bernd said.
“Yeah.”
“Yeah? I liked it too,” Bernd said.
“Me too,” Amber said.
The rest of the ride home was uneventful. Once inside the house, Fritz ran off to find his grandfather. “OPA!!” he cried as he ran into the den.
“What’s the matter, Fritz?” Wolfgang set his book aside and patted his lap.
Fritz climbed onto it. “Opa, Vati was in the movie!”
“He was?”
Fritz nodded. “They called him Jack Frost and he made it snow and he beat the bad guy and-”
“Slowly, Kliene.” Wolfgang smiled.
“Vati was in the movie, Opa!” Fritz said a bit more slowly. “He’s in charge of fun! And bwings snow days to kids and evewything!” He grinned, looking like a miniature version of his father.
Wolfgang chuckled.
“He’s the most ‘mazing fairy pwincess!”
“Ja…” Wolfgang said as he mentally shook his head. He had the feeling he needed to have a serious talk with his son.
“Fritz!! Where are you?” Bernd called out.
“I’m with Opa, Vati!”
Bernd walked in the den. “There you are, Mutti says you need a nap.”
“Oh…” Fritz grumbled. “Naps are for babies!” He pouted.
“How about I take one too? I’m kinda tired.” Bernd yawned for emphasis.
Fritz’s eyes went wide. “Okay, Vati!” He hugged his grandfather. “I need to go nap, Opa.”
“Good idea, Kleine.” Wolfgang ruffled Fritz’s hair. “You run along ahead, I want to talk to your Vati.”
“Okay!” Fritz scampered off to find his mother.
“Wow…” Bernd blinked. “I thought he was going to fight me over it…” Bernd ran a hand through his hair.
“He thinks you’re Jack Frost and that’s why it snowed last night.”
“Yeah? But it was mostly melted by the time we left the movies…”
“Doesn’t matter. You know how he thinks you’re a fairy princess?”
Bernd grinned. “Yeah?”
“Do you think that’s normal for a child to think like that?”
“Well, I did dress up like one for Halloween…”
Wolfgang sighed. “Don’t remind me. Anyway, it’s lovely Fritz has a wonderful imagination, but you don’t want him thinking things that that the other children will find strange.”
“Oh…”
“Bernd, I’m not trying to tell you how to raise your son, but you want him to like school and do well, unlike someone else I know,” Wolfgang teased.
Bernd laughed. “Okay, Vati. I’ll try not to encourage him,” he said, although they both knew he would continue to do so. “And I need to get my arse in bed, or else he’ll be out here looking for me and then he won’t nap at all.”
Wolfgang nodded and reached for his book. He went back to reading when his son left.
Bernd quietly let himself in his son’s room. He slipped off his shoes and lay down next to him in bed. “Have a “gute schlaf”.” Bernd kissed Fritz’s forehead.
“You too, Vati.” Fritz soon fell asleep. He dreamed his father was Jack Frost and that they were playing in the snow.
