Title: The Perfect Gift
Prompt: Skull
Fandom: Original
Characters: Bernd, mention of Amber, James, Cesare, Tino, Didi, Wolfgang, Luigi, Denis, Julio
Word count: 476
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd is out Christmas shopping and looking for a gift for Amber…
Author’s note: Please note that Amber & James belong to Kat.
Bernd wandered around the street fair, looking for something to get Amber for Christmas. He had already picked up a scarf and gloves for his father and “uncle,” a “ton” of romance books for his brother Didi from the book store’s sales bin, some art supplies from the craft store for his “cousin” Tino, and some t-shirts for his other “cousins” Cesare, Julio, and Denis. His best friend and Amber’s twin brother James got a sock monkey, a reference to a private joke between them, and a CD of pirated anime music Bernd had downloaded. He wanted to get her something “special,” but that was proving to be harder than he thought. The street fair was his last chance to get something she would love.
He was nearly to the end when he spotted a stall full of plushies and tote bags and other handmade items. Bernd hurried over to it. He looked around, smiling politely at the vendor and the other shoppers. He was about to give up on it, when he saw some cat plushies. Bernd grinned. These were not one’s average plushies, they were black and they had “bones” appliquéd onto them. Bernd picked one up and looked at it. It was the sort of thing Amber would love. He looked around the stall, hoping to spot the vendor. She saw him and came over.
“Those are from my ‘bones series’,” she said. “Unfortunately, they only seem to sell at the anime cons I attend.”
“But they’re so cool!”
“Thanks. Oh…” The vendor paused. “If you like that one, I have one you might like better.” She bent down and reached under the table and pulled out another skele-cat. This one’s skull was embroidered like a sugar skull.
Bernd’s eyes lit up. “That’s so awesome!” Amber will LOVE it!
The vendor smiled. “Thanks. She was a labor of love. And the last one I have too.”
“How much?”
“Twenty-five, those others are twenty.”
Bernd reached into his pocket and pulled out a twenty. “Oh…” He checked his pockets again, but that was all he had. “Oh well, all I have is this.” He handed her the twenty.
She took the twenty from him and paused as if thinking something over. “You really like that one, hunh?”
Bernd nodded. “I was going to get her as a present for my friend Amber. She likes stuff like that.” He sighed. “But I don’t have enough.”
“Well, I never got that reaction before to one of my cats and it is the holiday season…” She took the “plain bones” cat and handed him the sugar skull one. “Happy holidays.”
“Thanks!!” He grinned, and clutching the cat plushie, Bernd got out his phone. He called his father for a ride home. Bernd waited for him to arrive, pleased with himself for finding the perfect gift fro Amber.
