“My dear doctor, what kind of an adventure do you have planned today, that I needed a pair of swimming trunks?” Garak asked as Julian Bashir hurried over to him. “Another one of your James Bond inspired fantasies? This one taking place on a beach with a ‘Bond girl’ who looks suspiciously like Lieutenant Dax, I presume?”

Julian blushed, mentally cursing himself for doing so. “No!” He looked away and back, much to Garak’s amusement.

“Well?” Garak’s curiosity was piqued. Something was up and he knew if he was patient enough, Julian would tell him. He thought for a minute and said, “She turned you down! Aaah… What is it you humans say, ‘Always a bridesmaid and never a bride’? Or should it be more along the lines of second best? Although, I confess, I can’t think of one of your sayings involving ‘second best’…” he trailed off with a wry smile.

“I just wanted to go swimming and well, you shouldn’t swim by yourself,” Julian said as if that explained everything.

“Oh.”

“Yeah…” Julian smiled. “So let’s go swimming.” He hurried over to Quark’s, Garak following close behind. After a quick exchange with the Ferengi, they hurried off to stand in front of the holosuite door.

“After you,” Garak said.

Julian nodded and they entered the holosuite. “Computer, run program O’Brien one five zero two.”

The holosuite’s grid pattern faded into a suburban backyard. There was a swing set and slide, sandbox, along with child-sized playhouse, and a family-sized inflatable kiddie pool. They looked around. Julian was clearly puzzled as he was expecting a sandy beach, while Garak shook with silent laughter.

“This isn’t right...”

“You don’t say!” Garak chuckled softly.

Julian frowned. “It’s supposed to be a beach.”

“There is sand over there and,” Garak peered into the kiddie pool, “water. All one needs for a beach, no?” He grinned.

Julian sighed. “Yes, sand and water are the best parts of a beach, if you don’t count the people. Although, they can be annoying at times.” He gave his friend a pointed look.

Garak’s grin grew broader. “Indeed.”

Julian kicked a beach ball. He mentally berated himself for not checking the data rod his friend Mile’s wife Keiko gave him. He sat on one of the Adirondack chairs facing the pool. Garak came over and sat in the other one.

“Now what?”

Julian shrugged. “I don’t know. If you want to go, you can, Garak.”

“And leave you to enjoy this tropical paradise all by yourself?”

Julian could not help laughing at that. “That was the idea,” he teased.

Garak leaned towards him. “Well, my dear doctor, I’m afraid you’re stuck with me until our time is up.”

“Then I guess we’d better make the best of things.” Julian stood up and pulled off his t-shirt. He kicked off his sandals.

Garak also stood up. “And you’re in luck.” He smiled as he unbuttoned his Hawaiian shirt.

“Yeah?” Julian stepped into the pool.

“I’m very good at making the best of things; wouldn’t you say so, my dear?” Garak draped his shirt over the back of his chair. He joined Julian in the pool. “So Chief O’Brien and his family do this for fun?”

“Yeah.” Julian pulled his hand back, before pushing it quickly forward, sending a splashy wave of water at his friend.

Garak looked down and back up at his friend. He quirked his brow ridge at him, before sending a surge of water his way. It did not take long before the two of them let go of their inhibitions and were splashing each other like a couple of kids. And yet, just as quickly as their splashing had started, they stopped, with both of them settling back against the soft sides of the pool. They lazed there, enjoying the warmth of the “sun” on their faces and the cool water lapping against their skin as they relaxed.

When their time was up, they dried off and put on their shirts and sandals. Grabbing their towels, Julian looked up and said, “Computer, end program.” The idyllic backyard scene faded back into a grid pattern. “Well, that was fun.” Julian grinned as they left the holosuite.

“Indeed,” Garak replied. “Shall we do it again sometime?”

Julian nodded. “Thanks for coming.”

“Thanks for having me.” Garak nodded.

“See you!” Julian said as they went their separate ways.
