Wolfgang looked out the window at the scene before him. He sighed as autumn was drawing to an end. The first signs of winter appeared in the form of roughly an inch of snow covering the ground as well as the mostly bare tree branches. Another week and the kids would be off from school and the holidays would be here as well. He drank his coffee and made a mental note to invite Luigi and boys over for Yule.
He sighed softly. Ten years ago, he suddenly lost his beloved Angela right before the holidays. It was hard coping with her loss, not to mention helping poor Bernd cope with his mother’s death. While he was thankful Didi had no memories of that time, he was also sad his youngest never knew his mother. Wolfgang frowned as he gazed out the window, the sadness he felt threatening to overwhelm him. Despite the years, the end of autumn always left him feeling down. He drank his coffee, the bitterness echoing his mood, when the phone rang.
Wolfgang briefly considered letting the answering machine pick it up, instead, he walked over to the phone and answered it. “Hello.”
“Hey, Wolfie!! What’re you doing?”
“Nothing. What do you want, Louie?” Wolfgang did not know whether to be annoyed or grateful his friend called.
“I’ve got two tickets to the roller derby on Saturday night. Wanna go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Bernd’s old enough to watch everyone, so we won’t need a babysitter.”
“I know.”
“And Didi and my Cesare are serious enough to curtail any shenanigans. Tino… Well, that boy’s a dreamer, but a good one. Hell, they’re all good boys! If James and Amber are coming over, you know she’ll keep them all in line, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“I’m not worried about anything, Louie.” I’m just sad and angry she’s gone…
“That’s good to hear!”
Wolfgang could hear his friend smile as he rambled on. He mentally shook his head at him.
“So it’s settled. Pick you up at five and we’ll get bite to eat on the way. I’ll bring a couple of pizzas for kids, okay?”
“Thanks, Louie.”
“Anytime, my friend. So, what’re you doing for lunch?”
Wolfgang was surprised to hear himself laugh. “I’m coming over to your place for some minestrone and maybe a meatball hero.” He paused when his friend laughed. “Depends on how hungry I am.”
“Then you’d better get your ass over here, okay?”
“I’m on my way as soon as I hang up.”
“See you then!”
Wolfgang hung up. As much as he wanted to wallow in sorrow, it was hard to do so with Luigi around. He finished his coffee, washed the mug, and walked over to the mudroom to put on his coat. Zipping it up, he took the keys out of his pocket and left the house. Wolfgang got in his car and headed over to his friend’s apartment. As he drove, he had the feeling his beloved Angela would approve.
