“Danke, Opa!” Maria said as her grandfather handed her a stack of hardcover books. She had been hinting for a while that she wanted the Harry Potter books and now she finally had them. Her friends at school had been raving about them and she was eager to start reading.
“Bitte…” Wolfgang was happy he had found the whole set and in hardcover too. Seeing the happiness on his granddaughter’s face was thanks enough and made him happy to know she shared his love of books.
Setting the books down, she kissed her grandfather’s cheek, before bringing her books to her room. She gave them a place of honor on top of her shelf.
Maria giggled as she stood back to admire her new books. She reached out and grabbed the first book in the series. Clutching it to her chest, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Holding her book close, she liked the way it looked against her striped sweater. She primped for another minute, before she left her room and headed outside.
She sat on the front steps, opened her book, and smiled at the inscription her grandfather had written in German on the inside front cover. She turned to the first chapter and began to read. Maria became so engrossed in her book, that the afternoon sped by. Marking her place, Maria stood up and went inside.
“Getting chilly outside?” Wolfgang asked.
“A little bit.”
“How’s the book?”
“It’s really good, Opa! I can’t believe I was out there that long, reading it!” Maria giggled. “My friends were right; it is a good book! Thank you again!” She gave him a one armed hug, before sitting down to enjoy her book again.
