Bernd sat the kitchen table, reading his journal. He had a few color copies of pictures of some of his “adventures” that he took with his phone glued to the pages before him. There was the apple tree, he and James had climbed to pick apples, another of the place where every year Vati would go out with an axe and chop down one of the fir trees that grew on their property that they decorated for Yule, and another of the meadow he loved to ride Blitzkrieg in. The pretty maple leaves he had stuck in it were scattered about the table. He had meant to ask Amber which one she liked the best as he wanted to paste one in his journal, but could not decide which one to use.
Amber looked at him and shook her head. She placed a cup of coffee in front of him and a plate with a cinnamon roll that Didi had made on it. The rest of them still sat in the pan. She set her own cup of tea near his coffee and went to get herself a plate and the milk. Setting her plate down, she added some milk to their drinks, before putting it back in the fridge. Sitting down, she helped herself to a cinnamon roll and sipped her tea. Reaching out, Amber picked up a leaf.
“Which one do you like the best?” Bernd said as he read his journal.
“So you do know I’m here,” she teased.
He looked up at her and frowned. “Yeah?”
She rolled her eyes at him and took a bite of her cinnamon roll. While she savored the taste, she looked at the leaves. “This one,” Amber said between bites, handing him a lacy, red and gold one.
“I like that one too. Thanks.” He grinned. “Remember when we found it?”
Amber nodded and drank her tea.
Bernd chuckled and flipped ahead in his journal until he found a blank page. “Should I put the real leaf in it or take a pic and print it out?”
“Ummm… Maybe take a picture, that way it’ll last longer. I think if it dries out too much, it’ll crumble and make a mess in your journal.” Amber helped herself to another cinnamon roll. Bernd’s younger brother had tried a new recipe and they were really good.
“Okay.” Bernd whipped out his phone and photographed the leaf. “Thanks!” Bernd jotted down their adventures in leaf finding. When he was finished, he closed his journal and ate his cinnamon roll. “These are good! Did Didi make these?”
“Yeah. He’s becoming quite the baker. Vati had better watch out.” Amber sipped her tea.
Bernd laughed. “Yeah!” He finished his cinnamon roll and reached for another, washing a bite down with a mouthful of coffee. “They’re awesome!” He grinned.
“Yup!” Amber smiled.
“Should I take a pic and write about them?” He reached for his phone.
“If you must.”
“Say ‘cheese’!” he chortled as he took a picture of her in mid-bite.
Amber rolled her eyes. As annoying as he could get, she was glad he was feeling better today. As long as he took his meds and felt happy, she was willing to put up with few silly shots of her eating. She sipped her tea and watched as he wrote in his journal about the two of them and his brother’s cinnamon rolls.
