Dieter sat on the end of Amber’s bed, trying hard to keep from shaking with nerves. He was getting married to Valentino and everyone from his family to his friends had been imparting their “wisdom” to him on what makes for a happy marriage every time they caught him alone. Unable to take it anymore, he fled to the relative calm of Amber’s room, after his soon to be brother-in-law, Cesare, told him he would break his face, if he made Tino unhappy. The absurdity of that statement was not lost on Amber as Didi was nearly as tall as her twin brother James and powerfully built to boot, while Cesare was not only thin and wiry like Didi’s brother Bernd, he was closer to his height as well. She chuckled softly as the last time Bernd towered over his brother was just before Didi’s first growth spurt.

“It’s not funny, Amber.” Didi looked up at the woman he thought of as his mother, even though she was only four years or so older than him. He frowned.

“It is too!” She smiled. “Didi, you could have kicked Cesare’s ass way back in the fourth grade, if you wanted to.” Amber sat down and put her arm around him, holding him close. “But he knows you’re a push-over, kind of like that kitten that’s always climbing all over that Great Dane at Lou Lou’s. Besides, you and Tino are so good together.” She smiled. “Look, there is no way you are going to break your precious Tino’s heart. You aren’t made that way. And you two are that disgusting sort of bad cartoon movie love.” She grinned. “But Vati does have point; ‘Never go to bed angry.’ You’re going to fight. Everybody does. It would be worse if you never fought. Just make sure you have fun making up, okay?”

Didi barked out a little laugh. He was starting to feel better now that Amber had put her own spin on things. “Thanks.” Didi leaned over and kissed her cheek.

“No problem. Seriously, Didi, everyone freaks out on their wedding day.” Amber grinned. “Just be thankful Tino didn’t decide you should copy our ‘naked with piercings, instead of normal rings’ wedding. It would probably be the thing that finally gives Vati that stroke,” she teased.

Didi laughed. “I still can’t believe my brother pierced his nipples and lived to tell the tale.”

“I know, right?” Amber laughed. She was about to say something more, when there was a knock on the door and Bernd stuck his head inside.

“Come on! The wedding’s about to start!” Bernd walked over to his little brother. He leaned over and kissed his forehead. “I can’t believe… Well, I can believe it, but I can’t believe-”

“I thought we had to get going?” Amber stood up to go.

“Yeah!” Bernd said as he glanced over at her. Focusing his attention back on his brother, he said, “You’re going to do just fine.” He reached out to ruffle his brother’s hair, but stopped himself. “You and Tino are going to grow old and fat together, so quit worrying and let’s go!” He took Didi’s hands in his, and stepping back, he tried pulling him to his feet.

Didi rolled his eyes and let him help him up. The three of them made their way upstairs and when Didi stepped out the mudroom door into the backyard, where his wedding was being held, he felt like he was in a dream. He walked down the aisle with his father on one side and his brother on the other to stand in front of the Justice of the Peace. His brother took his place at his side as his best man. Amber and Cesare led the way down the aisle as Tino’s matron of honor and best man, followed by his bridesmaids Greta and Mishka.

The sound of Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus” began to play and everyone stood up to greet the “bride.” A low hush of voices spread through the guests as Luigi escorted his son down the aisle. Tino, instead of wearing a white tuxedo like everyone expected, solemnly made his way down the aisle in a wedding dress he found in the local thrift shop.

Didi blinked. He could not believe his eyes, and as they got closer, there was no mistaking Tino’s happy smile under his veil. Luigi beamed at him as he placed his son’s hand in Didi’s, chuckling as he gently patted Didi’s cheek. Everyone laughed when he said, “It’s still not too late to run!”

Didi shook his head and held his beloved’s hand. Everything seemed to fade away into nothingness as he recited his vows and placed the ring on Tino’s finger.

Tino blinked away happy tears. He had just finished his vows. Taking the ring from the Justice of the Peace, he placed it on Didi’s finger. “With this ring, I thee wed,” he said softly.

“You may now kiss the uh…” the Justice of the Peace paused, unsure of what to make of Tino, “bride.”

The moment both of them had been waiting for arrived. Didi lifted Tino’s veil and gathering him in his arms, he kissed him long and hard, while everyone cheered. He did it; he was now a married man and a very happy one at that. They walked back down aisle to Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” eager to start their new life together as a married couple.
