Wolfgang opened the back door, his younger son Dieter in his arms. He shook his head when his elder son Bernd pushed past him to play in the snow. Wolfgang stepped out, pulling the door closed behind him. He set Didi down and smiled. The toddler took a step, before plopping down on his bottom.
Didi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He was all bundled up and it was hard to move. He waved his hands at his brother. Didi laughed and bounced. He tried to bend forward to get up and go over to him, but all his layers made that impossible until Vati came over and helped him.
Bernd danced out of his baby brother’s way. He was too busy making snow angels and throwing snowballs at Vati. Even though he mostly missed, it was still fun and he did not mind in the least that his mittens were wet. Grabbing a handful of snow, Bernd shaped it into a ball. He was about to lob it at his father, when he thought better of it. Instead, he began to roll it in the light, powdery snow. It was not long before he had a good sized ball of snow. Bernd grinned and made another ball that was smaller than the first. He made another smaller ball, stacking them on top of the first one.
“Look, Vati! I’m making a snow man!” Bernd called out. He stuck a couple of rocks, he had somehow managed to find by rooting around in the snow near the house, where his father had planted flowers this past spring.
Wolfgang looked up from where he was playing with Didi. “Very good, Bernd.”
“I need a carrot for his nose.”
“Okay.”
“Can I get one?” Bernd stuck a stick in the side of his snowman, followed by another one on the opposite side.
“No, I’ll get you one,” Wolfgang said. He preferred to go inside to get it as Bernd would leave a trail of melting snow on the floor in his wake. “Watch your brother.”
“Okay… Come’re, Didi!” Bernd took his brother’s hand. “Let me show you how to make a snowball!”
Wolfgang sighed and mentally shook his head as he headed inside. He quickly returned with a carrot. As he approached his sons, Bernd fired off a snowball, hitting him in the stomach. “Bernd!” He frowned when his son grinned and bent down for more snow. His frown quickly faded when Bernd handed the snowball to his brother. Wolfgang smiled when Didi tried to throw the snowball at him.
“Good job, Didi!” Bernd hugged his brother.
Wolfgang chuckled. “Here’s your carrot,” he said, handing to his eldest. “Hurry up and put on your snowman. It’s time for Didi’s nap.” Wolfgang picked up his youngest. It was starting to snow again and he knew if they did not go inside soon, they would be out all day.
“Okay,” Bernd whined. He wanted to stay out longer, but knew he was better off going inside and not making a fuss. He figured if he was “good” maybe Vati would make him some cocoa. So he stuck the carrot in the snowman’s face and followed his father and brother inside. If he was lucky, Amber would wander over and they could play outside. Until then, Bernd decided to content himself with staring out the window and watching it snow.
