The crew of the science vessel Copernicus was poised to watch a distant star die. Science officer Lt. Qui stood near the view screen, taking notes on her data-pad. She hummed softly to herself. It was an old song from Earth’s past and she found it helped order her mind. Lost in thought, she ignored the captain’s approach, until he spoke.

“Think it’ll go nova soon?”

She nodded.

Captain Ross turned to his bridge crew and said, “Maximum power to the shields. Mister Lucas, be prepared to get us out of here.”

“Aye, Captain.”

He turned back to his science officer. Just as he was about to ask her another question, the star exploded as its core collapsed, sending a blinding flare of light, shooting out in all directions in the vastness of space.

“Aaah…” Qui said softly, “A champagne supernova in the sky.”

“A what?”

Qui blushed, her cheeks turning a pretty shade of blue. “A champagne supernova, sir. It’s from an old Earth song.” She looked over at him.

“Oh. I didn’t know you knew that,” he said, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

“I do as I’ve studied some of your human pastimes. I find it fascinating that your people set poetry to music. Even more interesting is that some of your people attempt to discern the meaning in the words. Apparently, some songs aren’t as full of hidden meaning as you like to believe.”

“So a song is just a song?”

Qui nodded as she took notes on the death of the star. “Anyway, I believe this song is about taking recreational drugs. Is it not?” She frowned. “That was very popular amongst your species during the time the song was written, no?”

Captain Ross laughed. “The song is about whatever you want it to be, like you’ve just said some songs have no hidden meaning. To get back to the song at hand, yes, there’s a drug reference or two,” he shrugged, “However, only a certain group of people used recreational drugs. The vast majority of us didn’t back then.” He grinned. “Or now.”

“I see.” She nodded. “It’s very pretty,” Qui said, indicating the supernova with a slight tilt of her head.

“Yeah… Like Smitarion champagne,” He said, with a smile, indicating her species.

“Indeed.” Qui’s blush deepened.

They stood there, admiring the supernova, for several minutes. Qui would occasionally glance at her data-pad. She also continued to take notes.

“Do you have the data you need or do we need to remain here for a while longer?” Captain Ross asked. Since the shields were holding, he was willing to remain here as long as she needed.

Qui looked down at her data-pad and scanned her notes. “I believe I have all I need, sir.” She looked up at him. “Permission to go my quarters to analyze it, sir.”

“Permission granted.”

With that, the two of them turned and walked away. The captain paused to watch her go. When the lift doors closed, he sat in his chair. “Take us out of here, Mister Lucas.”

“Aye, Sir.” The helmsman’s hands danced across the controls. Seconds later, the Copernicus headed out into the vastness of space in search of something new to explore.
