Queen Julianna Louise finished her dinner and stood up from the table. Her husband, Prince Alexander, followed suit, along with their guests. Taking the arm her husband offered her, the queen followed him as he led her to the ballroom. They entered, followed by their guests.
The queen smiled as the prince consort gave her hand a gentle squeeze. The ballroom had been turned into an underwater fantasy, with stylized wooden cutouts of fish and coral lining the walls, along with several mermaid carvings from the Isle of Mer. It was the young queen’s twenty-first birthday, and she had wanted a fancy dress ball to mark the occasion. Everyone was dressed as merfolk and Prince Alexander thought his wife looked adorable in her blue-green silk gown, and the pearl necklace and matching earrings he had given her for her birthday. On top of her head, she wore a tiara made shells.
“Shall we dance?” the queen said with a smile.
“Only if you want to,” her husband replied.
“I do!” Queen Julianna giggled.
Prince Alexander gathered her in his arms and swept her out onto the dance floor as the royal musicians played a jaunty sea shanty. The queen’s court soon followed and the ball was unofficially started. Everyone danced to various sea shanties, pirate songs, and other songs of the sea.
Feeling tired, Queen Julianna said, “Let’s take a break.”
“Are you okay, my dear?” Prince Alexander said softly.
The queen nodded. “I’m fine, just tired of dancing, and I’m thirsty.”
Prince Alexander nodded. He danced his wife towards the edge of the dance floor. Once there, it was easy to maneuver themselves over to the dais.
“Keep dancing, my lords and ladies,” Queen Julianna said as she sat down. Though they had only been married a few months, the queen loved her husband dearly and she idly wondered if she had conceived, even if it was way too early to tell. Mentally shrugging, she gently squeezed his hand, before turning her attention to the dance floor.
Her guests reminded her of the colorful fish that she kept in the pond in her private garden, with the way they glided across the ballroom. The ladies in particular, with their flowing gowns, looked like the fish she kept in a large ceramic pot in the solarium. The pot, along with a smaller one that she kept in her chambers, had been a gift from the emperor of some far away land that was known for its beautiful porcelain and colorful silks. The emperor had sent his emissary, bearing gifts for the young queen, in hopes of establishing trade between the two countries despite the great distance between them. The fish were a present from her husband. One of them was the same color as the gown she wore and its fins were just as flowy as its silky folds.
“Are you sure, you’re alright?”
The prince consort’s voice pulled her from her reverie. Queen Julianna nodded as she looked over at him. “I was just thinking about that little fish you gave me.”
“The blue one?”
“Yes! He’s the perfect thing to go in that smaller pot. I could have put a fern in there, but then you wouldn’t be able to see the pretty lotuses and fish painted inside it.” Queen Julianna pouted. “I’m glad you got me that fish to in it!” Her pout quickly morphed into a smile. “It’s a brilliant idea! Wherever did you come up with it?”
Prince Alexander smiled back at her. “I had asked the emissary about it before he left and he said his people kept fish in them. They’re good for when someone wishes to create an indoor lotus garden or if they don’t have room for a pond.”
“Aaah…”
Prince Alexander took her hand and kissed her fingers. “So, are you enjoying your birthday?”
“Very much so! I feel like a mermaid,” she ran her hand over the silken folds of her gown in her lap, “and queen of the sea!”
“Mmm… I wonder if you’re hiding a fish tale under that gown. Maybe I should check and see?” He put a hand on her knee and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I’ve always wanted to lie with a mermaid. Did you know that according to the sailors down at the docks, they’re an easy lay? So I was thinking, perhaps we could have a bit of fun in the bath? It’s closer than the harbor.” He winked at her. “And with the way you’ve been going on about mermaids, you sound like you’re pining for the sea, like they would do if they were stuck on land,” he teased, although he did find her enthusiasm rather endearing.
“Do I now?” she said in mock indignation. Looking to the side at him, she gave him her best disapproving look as she bit back a laugh at his crassness. She shook her head slightly as he could be such a naughty little boy at times. As annoying as it could be, she found she could never be angry with him for long anyway.
He nodded, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Maybe we could play in the fountain?”
Queen Julianna rolled her eyes at him. “Well,” she started, pretending he never said anything untoward, “I think that’s because my mother not only bathed in the sea around the island, but drank the water and ate fish from that area while she carried me. She said the midwife recommended she do so to settle her stomach so that her time would be easier.” Queen Julianna gave him a saucy look and she giggled softly at the color rising in his cheeks. “The waters are supposedly medicinal.” She shrugged. “Although, duty or not, I’m not sure I’d want to go on a tour of the realm while being with child. And to such an out of the way place too! Do you know, they barely speak Common there? I don’t know how Mother managed.”
“I see.” He smiled.
“Anyways… Let’s have one more dance, before the party ends, unless you’d rather I tell you exactly how I want to continue my birthday celebration in my chambers.” She leaned towards him, knowing he would sneak a peek at her cleavage.
Prince Alexander slowly raised his eyes to meet her gaze. “I think it’s a splendid idea and on the way to your chambers, I would love to hear all about your uh… celebration.” He winked.
The queen giggled and stood up. Her husband took her hand and led her back out onto the dance floor. Gathering her in his arms, they danced a lively reel, before slowing down to a waltz. When the waltz came to an end, the queen and her consort bid her guests good night, before retiring to the queen’s chambers for a private celebration. According to the queen’s lady’s maid, if the queen was not already with child, she would be very surprised if she did not become pregnant with the way the royal couple celebrated the queen’s birthday.
