Title: The Best Birthday Ever!
Author: kira
Characters: Kat Piggy, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Piggy, and her friends Jenny Bunny, Lisa Kitty, Erin Squirrel, and Kira Mouse
Summary: Today was Kat Piggy’s birthday…
Author’s Notes: This was unbetaed, so any mistakes therein are my own. This is also loosely based on a story Kat wrote for me about Kat Piggy and Kira Mouse. I loved the Richard Scarry vibes it had, which I hope came through herte.

For Kat, who asked for a story with piggies… Happy bday, my friend!

Today was Katrina Piggy’s birthday and she was very excited for her friends to arrive. She was going to have a tea party birthday party as she thought it would be fun to have something grown-up, while still being kid-friendly. So when she handed out invitations to her friends, she told them to wear their prettiest dresses. Right now, she was still dressed in shorts and a t-shirt that had “Birthday Girl” written on it, as she was busy helping her parents decorate the backyard for her party.

A table was set out in her backyard near the potting shed, where it was shaded by a large tree, and her mother had put a fancy tablecloth on it. On top of that table cloth Mrs. Piggy had put a lacy one. In the middle of the table was a vase full of flowers from the garden. Kat’s father had strung up streamers and party lights that were made out of old jars with battery operated tea lights inside. Mr. Piggy brought out a large folding table and set it up near the other, fancier table. Mrs. Piggy, with Kat’s help, covered it with a plastic table cloth, while Mr. Piggy went to get some folding chairs for the girls to sit on. This was where the girls would decorate their hats and when it came time to sit down and have some tea, it would be turned into a buffet for the party food.

Kat helped her mother set the main table with the tea cups and saucers she and her mother had found at various jumble sales, flea markets, and the local thrift store. There were also some teaspoons that Mrs. Piggy found at a garage sale, along with the teacup and saucers, which Kat was going to give to her friends as a party favor. Mrs. Piggy had also found a special cake set consisting of a cake stand, server, and matching plates for when Kat’s birthday cake was going to be served. There also some pretty plates for the little tea sandwiches they were going to have for lunch.

As soon as her daughter’s friends were all there, Mrs. Piggy was going to bring out a straw hat for each one, along with some glue, bits of lace, feathers, and old bits of broken jewelry, basically anything she could think of to decorate the hats. While the girls were decorating the hats, Mrs. Piggy would make a pot of tea. As a special surprise for the birthday girl, Mrs. Piggy decided to serve the tea in her mother’s old tea pot. She also decided to use the creamer and sugar bowl that came with it. Mr. Piggy had promised to help her make some simple tea sandwiches and serve them, so she was all set to go.

Kat looked at the clock and saw that it was nearly time for her party. She ran upstairs to her room, and opening her closet, she took out her party dress. Kat quickly changed into it and went downstairs. “Mom?” she called out.

“Yes, Dear?” Mrs. Piggy stepped out of the kitchen.

“Do you need any help?”

“I’m good, Sweetie.” Mrs. Piggy smiled. “Besides, your guests should be arriving any minute now.” No sooner had she said that, than the doorbell rang.

Kat giggled as she ran to answer it. Opening the door, she saw all her friends, standing there. She smiled.

“Happy Birthday, Kat!” they chorused.

“Thanks! Come in, come in!” Kat stepped back to let them in.

Kira Mouse stepped inside. She handed her present to Kat. “Happy birthday! I hope you like it!”

“Thanks! I’m sure I will.”

They giggled when Kat looked around for somewhere to put the present. Her other friends also giggled as they entered the house. Kat pushed the door closed with her butt, which had the girls laughing as they all trooped into the living room.

“Kat, why don’t you and your friends go out back?” Mrs. Piggy called out from the kitchen.

“Okay!” Kat piled her gifts on the sofa.

The girls, dressed in their best party finery, trooped through the kitchen. They greeted Kat’s parents as they headed towards the backdoor. Kat opened it and followed her friends outside.

“Ooh!” Jenny Bunny said. “Petty!”

“It looks like the tea party the Mad Hatter would have if he wasn’t mad,” Lisa Kitty added.

“Yeah,” Erin Squirrel said with a smile.

“It’s so magical!” Kira Mouse squeaked and her friends giggled.

“Let’s go sit down at the table,” Kat said. She walked towards it and her friends followed. Everyone took a seat. “We’re going to have tea and tea sandwiches for lunch and birthday cake for dessert. And Dad said he’s got a piñata for us too.”

“Are we going to have tea now?” Erin asked.

Kat blinked. “I have no idea.”

“Oh…” Erin also blinked.

Before an uncomfortable silence could settle over the party and get it off to a bad start, Mrs. Piggy hurried over to them, carrying a large box. “Kat, would any of your friends like some tea?” She set the box down on the folding table, opened it and took out several straw hats..

“Yes, please,” Jenny said.

“Please!” the other girls chorused.

“Okay then.” Mrs. Piggy smiled. “Kat, can you hand out the hats for me? The stuff to decorate them is also in the box. Thanks, Dear,” Mrs. Piggy said as she headed back inside to make tea.

“Will do!” Kat eagerly handed them out. With some help from her friends, Kat had everything set upon the folding table. Everyone took a seat around it.

“As you can see, we have some stuff to decorate out hats, because every tea party needs a proper fancy hat,” Kat said. She reached for a bit of lace and glued it on her straw hat. She also glued some ribbons and bows to it.

“That looks like fun,” Lisa said as she reached for a sprig of tiny pink flowers. She glued it to her hat.

Kira glued some plastic wedding pearls to her hat while Jenny glued bits of lace all over hers. Erin watched the others for a few minutes, before she started decorating her own hat.

“Here, Kira,” Kat said as she handed her friend a butterfly that was made out of feathers.

“Oooh! Pretty!!” Kira took it. “Thanks!” She glued it next to some flowers on her hat. “Jenny, here’s an extra bow for your hat,” Kira gave it to her friend.

“Thanks!” Jenny glued it on her hat.

“What do you think?” Lisa said as she put her hat on. Her hat was full of feathers and flowers. The remains of an old, broken brooch were glued to the front of it.

“It’s beautiful, Lisa!” Kat said.

Lisa blushed from her whiskers all the way up to her cheeks. She giggled. “Thanks. Let’s see yours!”

“Okay.” Kat put her hat on.

“I like it, Kat,” Erin said. She glued a tiny bit of lace next to a couple of feathers on the brim. She also added a string of wedding pearls and a silk rose. “What do you think?” she said as she tried on her hat.

“It’s cute!” Jenny said. Her hat had little bits of this and that all over it. It sat at a jaunty angle between her bunny ears. She giggled as she pretended to be a “fancy lady.” Her friends laughed.

Kira put on her hat. She had somehow managed to snake some ribbon through the woven straw, which she tied in a bow under her chin. She held her cheeks in her hands, made a silly face, and giggled.

“Let’s leave them on the table so the glue can dry. We’ll wear them at lunch.”

“Okay!”

Her friends laughed as they cleaned up their mess. Everything was carefully put back into the box, except for their hats, which they left on the table. The girls walked over to the other table and sat down. They wanted to be ready for the tea when Kat’s mother brought it out.

They did not have to wait long. Mrs. Piggy soon came out with a tray. On it were a tea service, a small stack of fancy plates, napkins, and plate of tea sandwiches. Mr. Piggy brought out a small plate of cookies.

Kat’s eyes went wide in surprise. “Mom, is that Grandma’s teapot?”

Mrs. Piggy smiled. “Yes. I thought you’d like to use it for your tea party.”

“Yeah! Mom only uses that when company comes!” Kat said to her friends.

“Wow!”

Mrs. Piggy set her tray down on top of the folding table. She took the teapot and filled all the girls’ cups. Kat’s father set the creamer and sugar bowl on the table for the girls to use. Everyone loved the tea, which made Kat very happy as it was her special blend that her grandmother had made especially for her. The tea sandwiches were also a hit.

“I don’t know which one is better, the cucumbers ones,” Kira took a bite of one, “or the watercress.” She took a bite of the other one.

“I like the cucumber,” Lisa said.

“I love the watercress ones!” Jenny said.

“I like them both,” Erin said. “Which one, do you like, Kat?”

“They’re both good!” Kat said as she helped herself to another sandwich.

When the sandwiches were finished, the girls got up to check on their hats. Since the glue was dried, they put them down and had more tea. This time, they had the cookies. Jenny told them about a game she had played with her aunt called “Tea Dueling.”

“Ready, set, go!” Jenny said and Kat and Lisa dunked their cookies in their tea, while Jenny counted to three. At three the girls took their cookies out of the tea. Kat’s fell apart, so Lisa won. The girls kept going until everyone had a turn and the cookies were eaten, with Lisa declared the winner.

That game over, the girls got up to chase some butterflies around the garden. Round and round they went, laughing. Jenny looked at Erin, and reaching out, she touched her arm.

“Tag! You’re it!” Jenny raced past Erin.

“Hey!” Erin, one hand on her hat, chased after Kira. “Tag! You’re it!”

Kira giggled as she chased the others. She sped up to Lisa. “Tag! You’re it!” she said as she reached out and tagged her friend’s tail.

Lisa turned to tag her back.

“No tag-backsies!”

Lisa frowned. She walked over to Kat, who was standing there, laughing. “Okay, then tag, you’re it!”

“That was too easy!” Erin said.

“Yeah! But it’s okay,” Kat said. “It’s my turn to be it!” She ran after her friends.

“Girls, do you want to do the piñata now?” Mr. Piggy asked. He was carrying the unicorn-shaped piñata in one hand, a large stick in the other.

“Yeah!” the girls cried.

“Honey!” he called out to his wife, “Can you bring me the blindfold?”

“Yes, Dear!” Mrs. Piggy came out a few minutes later with one of her fancy scarves. She folded it into a blindfold, while her husband hung up the piñata. “Girls, why don’t you take off your party hats and leave them at the table, where you were sitting?”

“Okay!” The girls rushed to do just that.

“Who wants to wear the blindfold?’ Mrs. Piggy asked.

“The birthday girl!” Kat’s friends cried.

That was how Kat found herself blindfolded, stick in hand, and spun around by her father. She giggled as she staggered around trying to hit the piñata. Her friends squealed whenever she came close enough to hit them as they ran away. Just when she was getting tired of missing, Kat finally hit it. She kept whacking it, while her friends cheered her on. Striking the piñata one last time, it finally burst, sending candy raining down on the ground. Kat lifted her blindfold and joined her friends, gathering candy and little trinkets.

Everyone brought their “treasure” over to the table for a quick trade. Mrs. Piggy gave each girl a bag to put their candy and trinkets in. Crayons and stickers were handed out, so that each girl could decorate their bags and write their names on it.

“Is everyone ready for some cake?”

“Yes please!!”

Mrs. Piggy laughed. “I guess it’s time for the cake.” She quickly refilled everyone’s teacup, before going inside to get the cake. She returned a few minutes later with the cake, her husband trailing along behind with the plates, forks, and the cake server.

“Happy Birthday to you…” Kat’s parents sang. “Happy birthday to you!” Her friends joined in. “Happy birthday, dear Kat! Happy birthday to you!”

The birthday girl smiled. This was the best party she had ever had. When the cake was put in front of her, her mother lit the candles. Kat took a deep breath and blew them out as her friends cried, “Make a wish!”

“I did! And I’m not telling!” Kat giggled.

“YAY!”

Mrs. Piggy cut the cake and gave everyone a piece. They all enjoyed the cake, with the girls having another slice. When everyone was finished, they went inside so that Kat could open her presents.

Once everyone was seated, Mrs. Piggy handed her daughter a gift. “What pretty paper! Who’s it from, Dear?”

Kat opened the card that was attached it and read it. “It’s from Jenny.” She carefully removed the wrapping paper. “Oooh!” Kat said. “It’s a mini green house! Thanks, Jenny!”

“There’s carrot seeds, lettuce seeds, and flower seeds,” Jenny said. “You should open Lisa’s next.”

“Okay. Mom? Can you hand me Lisa’s present?”

Mrs. Piggy nodded. “Which one is it?”

“Here,” Lisa said as she reached for it. She handed it to Kat. “I hope you like it.”

“Thanks, Lisa,” Kat said. She opened the gift. Inside was a miniature garden gnome family and a pair of tiny unicorns. “Awe… they’re adorable! Thanks, Lisa, they’ll look great in the green house.”

“Me and Jenny went shopping together.”

“We knew you always wanted a garden of your own and when we saw the gnome family, we looked around for stuff to go with it,” Jenny added.

“Thanks! It’s perfect and I can’t wait to get my hands dirty, planting in it!”

Mrs. Piggy handed Kat another present.

“It’s from Erin.” Kat looked in the gift bag. Inside was a cute crochet doll kit. “Thanks, Erin, it’s too cute for words!”

Erin blushed. “You’re welcome.”

Kat reached for the last gift. “It’s from Kira.” She giggled. “Thanks!” Kat opened the gift box and took out a book. “It’s the scary stories book I wanted! And a bookmark! I can’t wait to read it!”

“I’m glad you like it!”

“Thanks, everyone, for all my presents and for coming to my party.”

“You’re welcome!” her friends chorused.

The girls went outside to play in the backyard for a while, before going home. As each girl left, Kat made sure they took their bag of candy and their teacup and saucer. She also gave them a teabag of her favorite tea.

Kat could not help smiling. Today was the best birthday ever! All her friends had come and she got some really awesome gifts too. After setting up her new green house, Kat decided to try planting a veggie-garden first; she sat down and read over the crocheted doll pattern. It was surprisingly easy to do and she figured if she had any questions, she could always ask her grandmother for help. As for her book, Kat picked it up and began to read.
