The other day Hurricane Isaias roared up the coast. By the time it hit Long Island, it was pretty much a non-event; mostly rain & some wind. Okay, trees were knocked down, but when I younger, Hurricanes Irene & Sandy hit & did some damage, with houses destroyed & flooded, Central Park had trees down, even the subways were flooded! We lost power both times for almost 3 weeks. So Isaias comes along, & by now it's more of a tropical storm than a hurricane, & bang! The power's out again! o.0 Not only that it took DAYS for it to come back. You know it's BAD when the Governor declares a state of emergency & the County Executive for Nassau County is blasting the power company for supposedly "doing their job." You know if they actually did their job, & they even had help from elsewhere, there would be no reason for that kind of a reaction, right? This was a non event. I shudder to think how long we would be without power if we actually had a hurricane! And you can bet everyone who works for the power company probably only lost power for a couple of hours, instead of days! And what's even worse, with people out of work thanks to Covid, no one really has the money to replace all the food that spoiled thanks to having no power for DAYS! I went food shopping on Monday & by Wednesday I had to throw it all out thanks to no power on Tuesday! It finally came back on Friday night, there's only so much you can stuff into a cooler, plus then you need to hunt down ice. XD

Enough ranting for one day. ;D

Ugh what even?? I know when Sandy hit up (we were in Jersey at the time), it was like... I dunno 19 days? Something like that. I ended up sending my gramma out of state (my aunt and uncle came from Baltimore to get here) and I stayed with my parents (who thankfully had a generator for the fridge/freezer), gas stove, and fireplace.

That's crazy that it took them so many days to fix it! Hope you found ice at least! I'm sorry you lost so much food. And yeah, it's gonna be a real problem.

Check with... I want to say Red Cross? If there was a state of emergency declared, you might be able to get some help for food, etc.

I know, right? During Sandy, our street made the news cuz of how DARK it was after sundown & I live like 2 blocks from the main road, which had power. We were lucky to move in with my grandparents (they also have a generator), cuz I got sick from the cold. I had to work, cuz they managed to get power to the school, even though we didn't have any. So I would wait in the freezing cold house for Dad to come home & take me to my grandparents. You couldn't get gas, cuz stations were running out from all the generators that peeps suddenly bought.

Tell me about it! XD We did & a few hours later the power came back on. XD Luckily Dad was able to zip home & throw what he could of the frozen food in a cooler & took it to work, or we would have lost more. I feel bad for those who have no job & unemployment pays the bills & buys what lil food they can get. They totally need to get their act together cuz it's early in hurricane season & we could get hit for real this time.

I don't think we could get help as Dad is working. It's just annoying cuz of the waste of food & money. But thanks for the suggestion! :D

Thanks! Yeah, it's a pain in the arse, but it could have been worse; I could still be without power! I went out on the Island with Dad to take pix with his drone (I'm the spotter), and there were still trucks going around trying to restore people's power. Last night when Dad went for a walk, he said there was a good chunk of houses in our neighborhood still without power. XD They really need to get their acts together & figure out ways to prevent this!. I'm willing to have them come dig up the backyard to bury the lines if that'll help. Just so we don't have to deal with this again.

Tell me about it! XD It was weird how things went here. Some trees got knocked over and yet the next tree or two in line are still standing. Just walking around here, some places look like nothing happened, around the corner, it's a war zone. XD It was just a normal rain storm (not even that heavy - we've had some MONSOONS before that flooded the street!!)with some wind. Honestly it was a non-event that should NOT have decimated the Island like it did. XD

Thanks! It was just crazy & shouldn't have happened. We went to get food the other day, & that whole shopping center was knocked out (I guess they turned it off to work on the power), but it was fine after the storm. XD Ironically, it's down the street from the power company. XD Honestly, I think they go to areas where their staff lives & fixes that first & then takes their time getting the rest power. And anywhere there's stores, also got power quickly. They need to rethink their priorities & take care of customers first.

My BFF just ordered a super cool generator (solar powered, even!) so she can deal with the upcoming hurricanes in Florida. :)

During 2004, my house was without power for months. I wound up coming to Indiana...

Sweet!! That sounds like something Dad should look into! :D

OMG! I don't blame you for moving! Months without power is just insane!! About 2 weeks was bad enough during Sandy, but months?! I would have died! XD

*nods* Yeah! Someone who works with Dad still doesn't have any power. It's really bad & this was just a tropical storm. I can just imagine not having power for weeks again if it had been a hurricane. I know it's taking time to clean up all the fallen trees, and I'm sure part of the problem is tree services price gouging when someone calls to get a tree removed that bringing wires down. When the neighbor's tree fell in our yard, it was there for a week or two before she could find someone to come take care of it that she could afford. I think if Dad had a better chain saw, he would have taken care of what was in our yard. XD

Clearly I suck at answering comments.

Wow yeah! We lived like 5 minutes from Walmart and it took us like 45 minutes to get there. Oh man :-( My grandma lived the next town over from my parents--she got power back before us so told us to go stay at her house.

I'm so glad to hear that!

I don't know? Or check with your insurance.

WOW! That's good!

Thanks! :D

We did get some money to replace what we lost, which wasn't too bad.
