Amber put the finishing touches on her watercolor painting of a young vampire girl. She did it as part of her art project for school. She left the painting attached to the board she had affixed the heavy Bristol paper too, treating it like a frame. Amber nibbled on her thumbnail as she stared at the painting. It needed something in her humble opinion, but she could not figure out what was missing. Sighing softly, she was about to go ask Tino his opinion, when inspiration hit.

She reached for the bouquet of dried flowers that sat on the kitchen table. Amber carefully removed two springs of lavender and laid them on her painting. Liking how it looked, she got up and went downstairs to her room to get her glue gun. When she returned, she saw Bernd gazing thoughtfully at her work.

“Hey, Bernd.”

He looked over at her and smiled. “Hey, Amber.” He indicated her watercolor with a wave of his hand. “It came out really good! I like the flowers. They make it look… I don’t know, antique?” He flashed a lopsided grin at her.

Amber laughed. “I take it you like it?”

“Yup! I like your whole group of stuff for your project.”

“Thanks. Now hopefully, Mrs. Carter will like it.”

“What’s not to like?”

Amber looked at him like he suddenly sprouted another head, before shaking her head at him. “It’s not too Halloweeny?”

“It’s totally you and you do like Halloween.” Bernd grinned. “I’d say you’ve got another A.”

Amber face-palmed. She was about to reply with a snarky comment, when Bernd’s younger brother Didi entered the kitchen with Tino. She frowned and mentally shrugged. “Hey, guys, what do you think?” She held up her painting.

“I like it.” Didi smiled shyly.

Tino nodded. “I like the dried flowers, it’s an interesting choice and it works. Combined with the collage and the clay figure, you should do pretty good on your project.”

“See?” Bernd interrupted. “I told you it was an easy A!”

Tino looked over at him. “But it’s Mrs. Carter and she’s…” He held up a hand and tilted it side to side to illustrate his point.

“Yeah…” Amber sighed.

“Look, you’re not going to fail, as it’s good, and who knows? She might like it as it’s different than what the rest of the class’ll make.”

Amber nodded. Tino had a point as he also had Mrs. Carter for art, along with similar artistic abilities to Amber, so he knew what he was talking about. Amber decided not to worry about it. “Thanks, Tino.”

“You’re welcome.”

She cleaned up her “mess” while Tino and Didi got a snack. Bernd helped her bring everything downstairs to her room. She would know in a few days, after she handed in the last part of her project, how well she did. Even if the teacher hated it, Amber knew she did a good job on it and that’s what counted.
