Summary: Romano is annoyed his little brother was kissing Germany…
Author’s notes: Thanks go out to my beta, Jen, for looking this over for me. La Tomatina is a recent festival in the Spanish town of Buñol. It was started by a group of angry young men, who started a fight by throwing tomatoes at the people participating in a festival. They did it again the next year and the idea took on a life of its own, where it’s celebrated by throwing squished tomatoes at each other after a ham is knocked off the top of greased pole. The tomato fight lasts an hour and it has inspired similar festivals around the world.
Germany had no clue how or why it had happened, but a simple, innocent hug from his little buddy, Italy, had turned into a sweet, chaste, little kiss. He supposed it could have been more if Romano had not shown up at that precise moment, looking for his little brother. It also explained why he was covered in squished, ripe tomatoes while the two brothers argued with each other in Italian.
He had the feeling they were talking about him as he recognized the words “best friend” and “potato bastard,” his heart swelling with some undefined emotion akin to pride at the passionate way Italy seemed to be defending him. At least he hoped he was, until Germany realized Romano was just as passionate in what he was saying. The tomato mess forgotten for the moment, Germany stepped closer as it looked like the brothers were about to come to blows when they looked over at him and began to laugh.
“What?” Germany was so not amused. He folded his arms across his chest and glared at them.
Italy giggled. “Ve… Germany…” His giggles quickly turned into laughter. He could not help himself; his best friend looked ridiculous covered in tomatoes.
“You look like that asshole Spain after La Tomatina, you stupid potato bastard!” Romano roared with laughter.
Germany’s glare darkened. “Bastard! That’s all your fault!” He got right in Romano’s face.
“Ve…? Germany…? Romano…?” Italy wrung his hands helplessly as it looked like they would come to blows.
“WHAT?!” the two angry countries chorused as they turned to glare at him.
“My shoe’s untied again…” Italy gave them his best cute and pathetic look.
Germany put his hand over his face and heaved a long suffering sigh. “Give me a minute and I’ll tie it for you.”
“ASSHOLES!” Romano cried as he stalked off, muttering in Italian about how they deserved each other.
Germany walked over to his little buddy. Kneeling down, he quickly tied his shoe. When he stood up; Italy threw his arms around him again and kissed him. That was when Germany realized that was how this all started in the first place…
