Author’s Note: Thanks to my beta, Jen, for looking this over.

It may not have been a tangible gift, but it was still a gift and a very precious one at that. They were in the park, sitting on a bench, watching the dogs play in the grass, when Italy leaned against him. “Ve…” he said softly.

“Are you alright?” Germany asked as he looked over at him.

“Yeah… I was just thinking about that boy I used to like when I was younger.”

“Okay…”

“Ve… Germany?”

“What?”

“You want to hear about him?” Italy said softly.

“Only if you want to talk about him.”

“Okay… You know, it was a beautiful day like this when he rode off to war.”

“Really?” Germany gently prodded.

“Yeah…” Italy leaned forward, his hands resting loosely in his lap. He smiled. “I gave him my panties as a keepsake. When I was younger, I wore Signorina Hungary’s old clothes.” He giggled. “Everyone thought I was a girl.”

“I bet you were really cute.”

“Grazie. Prussia used to think so.”

“Prussia?” Germany was surprised to hear that.

“The boy I used to like was his little brother, Holy Roman Empire.”

“Oh… Prussia doesn’t talk much about him.”

“No? But he’s your brother.”

“I know.” Germany sighed. “Prussia… I feel like he’s keeping something from me whenever I ask him about my childhood.” He frowned. “You know I can’t remember anything of it.”

“That’s right! I’m so sorry, Germany, I forgot! Please don’t be sad!”

“I’m not sad, and I love hearing stories about when you were little.” Germany’s lips curved briefly upwards in what passed for a smile. “And if makes you feel better, Prussia told me I’m Vati’s keepsake.”

“Yeah?”

Germany nodded. “Vati was known as Germania.”

Italy smiled. “That’s Nonno Roma’s friend! Did you know Romano is his namesake?”

Germany nodded. “Anyway, what happened to Holy Rome?”

“He rode off to war with my keepsake and fought long and hard, but he was always rather sickly… I think that’s the only reason why Signor Austria tolerated me playing with him as he felt it would make him stronger.” Italy sighed. “But it still didn’t make him strong enough. When he came back from the war, he was very ill, Germany.”

“Poor thing.”

“Yeah… They did everything they could for him, but one day…” Italy looked over at him his eyes shiny with unshed tears.

Germany patted him on the back. “Sssh… it happens, sometimes a country dies, or it gets taken over and becomes something new.”

Italy wiped his face with the back of his hands. “I know, but he was your brother, Germany.”

“Well, I’m glad he got to know you.”

“Yeah?”

Germany nodded. “What was he like?”

“Ve… He could be very serious and he was always helping me when I got into trouble, kind of like you do.” Italy smiled at his friend. “And he always loved it whenever Prussia would visit cuz then Prussia would flirt with Signorina Hungary and just be a general nuisance to poor Austria.”

Germany snorted. “He still is.”

“Yeah!” Italy laughed. “But what I remember the most about him was his eyes… They were such a pretty shade of blue and it always made me sad that I never saw eyes like that again.” He sighed softly.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay…” Italy gazed at him like he was seeing him for the first time. “Your eyes are just like his… and he used to comb his hair back like you do too.” He smiled. “But I guess that’s cuz you’re brothers, no? Everyone always says I look like Fratello.”

Germany nodded. He felt a sharp pang of jealousy for the brother he never met, but quickly quashed it. He listened raptly while Italy told his favorite story about him. “I wish I could have met him.”

“I wish you could have too. I think you have been very close like me and Fratello.” Italy smiled.

“I think so too.” Germany gave him one of his rare smiles. “I think we’d better go, before Prussia decides to send out a search party.” He whistled for the dogs.

“Yeah!” Italy said as the dogs came running.

“Italy…”

“What?”

“Thank you for the… gift.”

“Gift?” Italy frowned.

Germany nodded. “Thanks for telling about my brother. It’s a gift I’ll treasure.”

“Prego! Ve… Germany?”

“Yeah?” Germany said as he put the leashes back on the dogs.

“Can we stop and get gelato on the way home?”

“Of course. It’ll be my treat.” Germany said as they got up and left the park. As they walked along, he could not help thinking about the brother he never knew sand he made a mental note to get Italy to talk more about him…

It's rather hard to imagine the usually stiff Germany actually complementing Italy/Chibitalia "cute," but other than that, two thumbs up for the story.

*Blushes* Thank you. I think at this point in their relationship, he would, especially since Italy's opened up about the boy he loved.
