Summary: Cake and coffee at Germany’s house…

Prussia was out front, raking leaves and watching the dogs, while his brother Germany was inside baking. Taking a deep breath, he paused to see what the dogs were up to, and he could just make out the tantalizing scent of pie amongst the scents of the season on the breeze that blew the last of the foliage from the trees. He grinned and put his back into his work, raking the leaves into piles. Occasionally, he would have to stop and pick up the stick Berlitz dropped at his feet and throw it for her, while Aster and Blackie waited to chase it too. Raking the leaves, Prussia was amazed that the dogs had not only managed to avoid messing up his neat piles, but that he actually had time to make them.

Germany, meanwhile, was busy peeling a couple of the green squashes Italy gave him from his garden to make zucchini bread. Setting it down with the others, he went to check on the pumpkin pies in the oven. He had invited Italy over for Kaffee und Kuchen, and he wanted things to be perfect. He took a deep breath, relishing the aroma of pies in the oven. It was not the first time he silently gave thanks to America for the cookbook featuring cakes and pies, and the fact that it was beautiful outside, which kept Prussia away from the kitchen so that he could bake in peace. Humming softly, he got out the food processor and julienned the zucchini for the bread.

Austria was also bustling about the kitchen, making the tiny Viennese cakes his cousins and Italy loved. He was also glad Prussia was outside and not underfoot while he baked. He and Germany worked well together, cleaning as they went, and timing things so that the little cakes would be ready to pop into the oven the minute the pies were done. Austria was dying to taste the zucchini bread and pumpkin pie, as he refused to believe that vegetables could be used to make dessert. He silently lamented the fact that they could not find any sweet potatoes in the market, as the thing called “sweet potato pie,” a side dish no less, was rather intriguing with its marshmallow topping.

When everything was finished, Germany made a pot of coffee. He glanced up at the kitchen clock, while Austria got out some plates, mugs, forks and spoons, chuckling softly, when at four precisely, the backdoor opened and in walked Prussia, Italy, and the dogs. Greetings were exchanged as they grabbed a mug and sat around the table, enjoying a cup of coffee, while the baked goods were served. Germany made a mental note to call America later and tell him that the pumpkin pie was a hit and ask him how he liked his recipe for chocolate cake.

“Hey, West! Got any more pie? This is better than America’s!”

Ja…” Germany said as he handed Prussia another slice. A hit indeed…
