For Ciel… Happy Holidays!

“Damn it!” Gilbert said as he took a shortcut through the park. He was trying to get home from his friend Tony’s house, before his father did. It was bad enough he had left his backpack over his friend’s house, but as the clouds rolled in and the sky darkened, now he had to worry about possibly getting wet too. Gilbert glanced up at the sky when something cold and wet hit him on his nose. He was hoping to get home before the rain started to really come down, but the big fat drops that began fall showed him how futile a thought that was. So he hunched deeper into his red hoodie and hurried none-the-less. Gilbird perched on his shoulder, peeking out of the sweatshirt’s hood and chirping advice that Gilbert ignored. When it started raining harder, Gilbert kicked it into high gear and started running.

He was making good time too, dodging puddles as he zigzagged down the path through the park. Feeling cocky about making it home before he became soaked to the skin, Gilbert sidestepped a puddle, twisting his ankle in the process. Arms windmilling almost comically, he surprised himself by remaining upright as he fought to regain his balance, instead of face planting onto the path. Gilbert slowly hopped to a stop.

“Shit, shit, shit!” he swore. Every time he put weight on his injured ankle, searing pain shot up his leg. Gilbert hoped it was not broken as he limped and shuffled his way over to the vending machines. They were enclosed in a small shed-like structure with a bit of an overhang. It was not much, but at least it was something and as Gilbert fished his cell phone out of the back pocket of his jeans, he was happy to have it. A quick call home would have brought his father and brother, and he was willing at this point to have another week added to the two he was already grounded with, having gotten in trouble for smoking last weekend, except he discovered much to his horror that his phone was out of charge.

“Oh hell,” Gilbert whined to himself as he watched the rain pouring down. “Hey, Gilbird?”

The little yellow bird chirped.

“Can you go get help?”

Gilbird cheeped in reply.

Gilbert got him out from under his hood. “Thanks,” he said, before watching him fly off. Leaning against the vending machine, he fished some change out of his pocket. He put it in the one that dispensed hot beverages and a few moments later, a cup of lousy coffee was not only warming his hands, but his insides as he sipped it.

Gilbird flew homewards. He hated the rain as much as Gilbert did, but his human friend was hurt and needed him. As he flew across the park, Gilbird noticed there was another person foolish enough to be out in the rain up ahead on the path. The little yellow bird swooped in for a closer look. He peeped when he recognized one of Gilbert’s friends. He tried landing on the guy’s head.

Ivan frowned. “Hey!” he said, waving a hand over his head.

Gilbird landed on it and chirped excitedly, while hopping up and down on Ivan’s hand.

“You’re Beilschmidt’s little pet, aren’t you?” Ivan chuckled. He felt like he was in one of those silly Disney movies his big sister was so find of. “What happened to the princess?”

The little yellow bird cocked his head to the side. He chirped again and pecked at Ivan’s coat sleeve, trying to get him to help. Gilbird flew off Ivan’s finger. He circled around his head, peeping frantically.

“Okay, oaky. Where’s the princess?” Ivan motioned for Gilbird to lead the way.

Gilbird flew back the way he came, while Ivan followed along behind him. A few minutes later, they reached the shelter of the vending machine shack. Gilbert looked up at him, eyes wide with surprised as he carefully moved over to make room for Ivan.

“Hey, Princess,” Ivan said, a shy smile twitching the corners of his mouth upwards. He thought his friend looked cute, leaning there, trying to keep dry. Since he also appeared to be trying to look past him, Ivan turned around to see who was coming. Finding no one, he looked back at Gilbert.

“Princess?” Gilbert blinked. “What the hell’s the matter with you, Braginsky?” He frowned and looked away. Of all the people in the world for Gilbird to find as a possible rescuer, it had to be Braginsky. Gilbert had known him since middle school, where he used to bully him until Gilbert started hanging out with his best friends, Francis and Antonio. They had had an uneasy truce during their first two years of high school, finally forming a bit of a friendship their junior year.

“Your little friend came and got me. It was like a scene from a Disney movie, so that makes you a princess in need of rescuing, yes?” He smiled shyly at him.

Gilbert sputtered wordlessly.

“So, aside from being wet, what else do you need rescuing from?” Ivan’s shy smile broadened into a grin.

Gilbert’s avian friend cheeped in reply.

Gilbert glared at the little bird. “Nothing.”

“Well, then if it’s ‘nothing’, then I should get going. See you tomorrow in chemistry.” Ivan waved and stepped out into the rain. He got about five paces, before Gilbert called out to him.

“Wait! I… I need to borrow your cell phone. Mine’s dead.”

“Sure.” Ivan came back and reaching under his coat, he pulled out his phone, handing it to Gilbert.

“Thanks.” Gilbert dialed home. “Hey, Lutz, it’s me…” he laughed. “Ummm… is Vati home? What?” He made a face when his brother told him their father was working late. “Shit! What? Yeah, I’m okay… I’m here with Ivan. Yeah… I know it’s raining, Lutz…I know, Lutz… I gotta go. Wait!” Gilbert held the phone away so his brother would not hear and looked at Ivan. “What?”

“Tell him you’re coming home with me.”

“What?” Gilbert blinked. “I can’t. I should’ve been home like a half hour ago...” he trailed off softly. Holding the phone to his ear he said, “Lutz, Ivan’s coming over. I know, but Vati never said I couldn’t have friends over. I’ll explain when I see you. Bye.” He hung up and handed the phone back to Ivan. “Thanks.”

“No problem. So, are you going to tell me what’s wrong, Princess? Yes?” Ivan grinned. “I can’t wait all day for you to tell me. And who said I could just up and go to your house on a whim?”

“Ummm…” Gilbert, feeling his cheeks heat up, looked away. “I twisted my ankle, running in the rain.”

Ivan nodded. “And?”

“It hurts to walk on it and I was at Tony’s and stayed a bit later than I should have,” he said ruefully. “I was trying to get home before it rained… and my father got home.”

Ivan tilted his head to the side. Despite the darkness, it was only five o’clock in the afternoon.

“I got grounded for smoking…” Gilbert drank the warm remains of his coffee. “And if you don’t help me, I’ll be grounded for life.”

“Yeah? “ Ivan laughed. “My old man grounded me three weeks ago for drinking. My sister Katya was home from college and she had a party while my parents were out. My little sister Natasha ratted us out.”

“Yeah?” Gilbert grinned. “Lutz is pretty cool; he wouldn’t tell on me, but he’d nag me about it and make me wish he had.”

“Come on, Princess Badass, let’s go.” He started to walk away, until Gilbert stopped him.

“I can’t.” At Ivan’s unspoken question he added, “My ankle, remember?”

Ivan made a face. “Sorry, I forgot. So which one is it?”

“My left.”

“Okay.” After a bit of careful maneuvering, since there was not much room in the shack and Gilbert found hard to walk, Ivan somehow managed to get Gilbert’s left arm around his neck, while Ivan snaked his right arm around Gilbert’s waist. He found it hard to restrain himself from pulling the other boy close, as Gilbert had been the object of his desire since they had met back in the fifth grade. Unable to express his feelings any other way, Ivan showed his affections by bullying poor Gilbert, in much the same way Gilbert had teased Lizzie Héderváry.

They slowly made their way down the path, until Ivan had had enough. “It hurts, yes?”

“What do you think, Braginsky?”

“I think it hurts a lot, Princess,” Ivan said as he scooped Gilbert up in his arms.

“Hey! Put me down!!” Gilbert cried, even though he was hanging on with both arms around Ivan’s neck. “I’m not a princess!!” As embarrassing as it was to be carried like that, Gilbert had to admit it felt… nice.

“Okay.” Ivan carefully set him down. “We’re going to be soaked by the time we get out of here.”

“I know.” Gilbert gingerly tried putting more weight on his foot, but his ankle was having none of it. “Damn it!” he swore as he grabbed onto Ivan again.

“Just get on my back, Gil, and I’ll carry you that way.”

“How come you didn’t call me ‘princess’?”

“It upsets you, yes?”

“Kinda…” Gilbert looked up to meet Ivan’s gaze. He blushed with eh realized he was holding onto him. Just as he loosened his grip, Ivan wrapped his arms around him. When Gilbert opened his mouth to say something, Ivan quickly leaned in and kissed him. It was short and sweet, but it left them both feeling terribly shy and embarrassed.

“Sorry… But I’ve always wanted to-” Ivan’s words were swallowed up in Gilbert’s kiss. It was just as chaste as the previous one and just as quick. He pulled back and stared at his friend. “Gil?”

“Now we’re even and I really need to get going, Ivan.” Gilbert let go.

“Yes… Ummm…” Ivan stood there, thinking. “I know, I’ll carry you on my back.” He turned around and knelt on one knee.

Gilbert snorted. “You know if you’re going to propose,” he teased, “you’re facing the wrong way.” He wriggled out of the sleeves of his hoodie, leaving it to rest on his shoulders.

Ivan laughed as he shook his head. “Get on, Princess.”

Shrugging, Gilbert climbed on his friend’s back. He wrapped his arms around Ivan’s neck, pulling his hoodie to cover them both as best he could. Hooking his arms under Gilbert’s legs, Ivan stood up. Gilbert rested his cheek against his friend’s and said softly, “Thanks.”

“No problem.” Loosening his scarf as Gilbert was unintentionally pulling on it, Ivan began walking in the direction his friend told him to go. He smiled when little Gilbird nestled in against his neck. They arrived at Gilbert’s house just as his father was getting out of his car.

“Gilbert?”

“Hey, Vati.”

“What are you doing?”

“I hurt myself and Ivan was nice enough to help me get home. I called Lutz to tell him that I’d be late.”

Wolfgang Beilschmidt frowned as he listened to his son’s story. “Let’s get out of the rain.” He ushered them inside where they were greeted by the family dogs and an anxious Ludwig, in the kitchen.

“Vati! Gil’s hurt and he’s coming home with… Oh, hi, Ivan.”

“Lutz, be a good boy and go find something dry for your brother and his friend to wear,” Wolfgang said as he took off his coat, setting it on the back of a kitchen chair. He knelt and helped his son off with his shoe, and looked at his ankle. He gently probed it, not liking it when Gilbert winced. Wolfgang set his foot down and stood up. “I don’t think it’s broken, Runt, but we’ll ice it for now and keep an eye on it.” He walked over to the fridge and took out a bag of frozen peas, which he handed to Ivan. “Hold that.” Much to Gilbert’s mortification, he carried him upstairs to his room, Ivan grinning behind them.

“We need to get you out of those wet clothes, Runt.”

“Vati, I can do that myself, really I can.”

“You sure?”

“Yes! And if I need any help, I got Ivan.”

Ivan nodded. “We’re in the same gym class, Mr. Beilschmidt, so it’s not like I haven’t seen him in his underwear.” He shrugged.

Gilbert sat at his desk and covered his face with his hand. You’re not helping, Ivan, then again, you don’t know that Vati caught me kissing Francis when we were supposed to be studying for a test…

Wolfgang was not amused, but he let the matter drop, when Ludwig entered with a pair of sweatpants for Ivan. “I’ll be up in ten minutes with dinner. If you haven’t already, you’d better let your parents know where you are, Ivan.”

“Will do, sir.”

When his father left, Ludwig said to Ivan as he handed him the sweats, “We’re about the same size, so I figured they’d fit you. I can also get you some dry socks if you need them.”

“Thank you, but my feet luckily are dry.” Ivan tapped a booted foot.

“Hey, Lutz? Can you put Gilbird in his cage and get me something to wear? I’m soaked.”

“Okay. Come’re Gilbee,” Ludwig said as he walked over to the cage. Gilbird flew over to it, landing on top. From there, it was a simple matter to get him side.

Gilbert shivered as he watched his brother look through his drawers for something to wear. He took off his white school uniform shirt, leaving the black t-shirt he wore underneath on. It was also wet, but felt so scrawny next to his younger brother and Ivan. The two had a similar build, but Ivan was not as muscular, preferring the school’s chess team to the football one. “Danke,” he said when his brother came over to him with some dry clothes. “You don’t have to stand there like an idiot, Lutz. I know how to dress myself.”

“I know, but…”

Ivan padded over to him, after laying his wet pants over the radiator and pulling on the grey sweatpants. “If you tell me where I should put his wet clothes, I’ll do it for him.”

“Okay.” After telling Ivan to put them in the hamper and how to find the bathroom, he left.

When Ivan turned his attention back to his friend, Gilbert was struggling to get out of his wet jeans. “Let me help you, Gil.” He helped him to stand. Hands on Gilbert’s hips, he pushed them down, accidentally taking his boxers with them.

“Hey!”

“Sshh…” he said as he leaned in to kiss his friend. “They’re also wet,” Ivan murmured against Gilbert’s lips. They kissed.

Breaking it, Gilbert said, “My father’s going to come up here any minute now.”

“So?” Ivan slid his hands around, grabbing Gilbert’s butt. He felt emboldened by their earlier kisses and the fact that this seemed so close to one of his fantasies about catching Gilbert in a similar state of undress in the school’s locker room that he could not help himself.

“So, my ass is hanging out and I’m kissing a guy. You do the math.” And the thought of that happening is making me hard too…

“Oh…”

“Later, when he’s busy helping Lutz with his homework, we’ll have a chance to figure things out.”

“Yes?”

“Yeah.” Gilbert tried to fig leaf himself with his hand when Ivan sank to his knees. He idly wondered what it would be like to stuff his cock in Ivan’s mouth, but he wanted to take things slow, call him a romantic or whatever.

It took all Ivan had to ignore Gilbert’s arousal. As much as he wanted to do otherwise, he also did not want to scare him off. It had happened before when he got a little too aggressive with his now unfortunately ex-friend Toris. Closing his eyes, he somehow managed to get him dressed and resting comfortably on his bed. Scooping up Gilbert’s wet clothes, he took down the hall to the bathroom and while he was gone, Gilbert’s father had brought them up their dinner.

“Ivan! Dinner’s here!” Gilbert called out, prompting his friend to hurry back. They ate in companionable silence that threatened to get awkward at times. While they had hung out together at school, their rocky history kept them from taking it further. When they were finished, Ivan took the plates downstairs leaving Gilbert alone with his thoughts.

I wish I knew what to do… Should I push things to see how far they’d go…? Or just leave it at a couple of kisses…? Damn it! Francis’d know what to do, but I can’t call him… Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!!

“You okay?” Ivan said when he came back. He closed the door behind him and hurried over to sit on the bed.

“I’m fine…”

“You sure? I have to go soon, my sister called and she’d coming to get me.”

“Oh…”

“If you’re not in school tomorrow, can I come over? Yes?”

Gilbert nodded. “Francis and Tony’ll be here, we always get each other’s homework whenever someone’s out.”

“That’s okay.”

Gilbert nodded. Things threatened to get awkward again, when Ivan leaned in and kissed him. When they came up for air, both were grinning. Despite their rocky start all those years ago, Gilbert had the feeling this was the start of an awesome friendship and judging by the look on Ivan’s face before he left, he thought so too…
