Ashok looked over at the basket where the baby lay in the summer sun, sleeping. It was too small and delicate to play with, too noisy, too smelly, took up too much of his wife’s time, and he was sorry he asked Luke to help find it. He wondered if they could take it back to Madrona and leave it there. Sitara lost one baby there, sure she was sad for a while, but she got happy again. He reached in to poke it, despite being warned against it. The baby grabbed his finger and smiled. Ashok laughed. “Hi, Baby.”
