Wolfgang shook his head as he walked into his den. His son Bernhard had just come back from a trip with his girlfriend, saying something about getting married over the weekend by piercing their nipples. Bernd had even lifted his shirt to show off the thin little gold rings and was encouraging Amber to show off her new piercing when he left the room. Wolfgang sat down in his favorite chair, the kind you would find in an old library and picked up his book. He tried to read, but his mind just would not let him concentrate on the words. He glanced at the little framed picture on the table next to his chair and smiled. It was an old faded photograph of his late wife and Bernd, taken when his son was a baby.

Mien Engel.” Wolfgang closed his book, and reaching for the picture, he picked it up. “Mien Engel,” he repeated. “Bernd and Amber finally got married this weekend.” He sighed. “I think we no longer need to worry about him,” he said softly. “Amber’s very good to him and for him. She’ll keep him from getting too crazy.” He smiled. “She always has and always will. And yes, he’s still got that silly pink hair. That I think, mein Engel, is a losing battle. I have the feeling he’ll be a grandfather and still have pink hair; then again, Amber’s hair is blue…” Wolfgang chuckled.

“I wish you were here, maybe we could have had a proper wedding, then again who knows?” He shrugged. “All I know is Bernd was babbling about being naked and piercing their nipples.” Wolfgang shook his head. “I know, I know, I don’t understand kids these days too. Thank goodness the grandchildren are fine. They should be with three mothers looking after them and a grandfather, and assorted uncles, and one silly, pink-haired father.” He snorted in amusement. “Maybe you’re right, mien Engel, maybe it doesn’t matter if they’re married or not, or if it was traditional or not, as long they’re happy, who cares?”

Feeling better, Wolfgang put the picture back on the table. He picked up his book and opened it. His head clearer, Wolfgang began to read until a knock on his study’s door made him look up.

Vati?”

“What’s the matter, Bernd?”

“You’re not upset we didn’t have a real wedding with a church and all that?”

Wolfgang opened his mouth to say something. He paused and smiled. “No, all I want is for you and Amber to be happy. Although, I am happy you’ve decided to make it ‘official’.”

“Yeah?”

Wolfgang nodded. “I just wish your mother was here to see you get married.”

“Me too…”

“Then again, with you two who knows what kind of a crazy wedding it would have been, if we were all invited?” Wolfgang teased.

Bernd laughed. “Yeah… and uh, speaking of weddings, can me and Amber have a reception-slash-barbeque next weekend?”

Wolfgang nodded.

“Thanks, Vati! I’m going to go tell Amber!” Bernd left.

Wolfgang shook his head and went back to reading…

I heard Wolfgang in the voice of Tevye from the movie version of Fiddler on the Roof even though he's German and Tevye is Russian. I guess that sort of Oy Vey, what can you do about kids these days, attitude transcends nationality.

*laughs* Now I'm picturing Tevye with sons, instead of daughters, in a modern day version of Fiddler. XD It really does. I guess that's because families are all the same deep down inside. :D
