Author’s Note: Thanks go out to my beta Kat for looking this over for me. Also James and Amber, who’s mentioned in passing, belong to her.
“Hey, James?!” Bernd called out to his friend. “You wanna come over and play?” Bernd smiled. He was never sure with James as sometimes he liked to be called “Amber” whenever they played together. “We can play ‘Amber’ if you want!” he added, hoping that would get his friend more interested in playing, especially since he was with his dog, Duke. Bernd had quickly learned to associate the dog with the game “Amber” because every time he called him James, he got yelled at.
James’ face brightened. He loved playing with Bernd, even if the kid could not tell the difference between himself and his twin sister Amber. Since they often played tea party, being called “Amber” kept the adults from yelling at them for playing sissy games, not that they could figure out what was so sissy about it. “Okay! Come on, Duke!” he said as they hurried over to Bernd.
“So what do you wanna play?”
“I dunno?” James said, kicking the dirt in front of him.
“Oh…” Bernd looked up when a big fat raindrop hit him on the nose. “It’s raining… I think?”
James also looked up. He blinked when one hit him in the eye. “It’s raining.”
Bernd grinned. “You wanna make mud pies and jump in the puddles?”
James shrugged his shoulders. “It’s not raining enough yet.”
“It could.”
“Won’t your dad make you go inside?”
“Only if he sees me.” Bernd took James’s hand. “Come on, let’s go play behind the barn.” He led his friend towards the small structure that was actually an old stable. The area was zoned for horses and the previous owners had had a pony for their children. Bernd had spent hours playing in there since the arrival of his baby brother, despite his father telling him not to.
“Then what about your mom?”
“She’s an angel now.” Bernd looked so sad; James thought he was going to cry.
“Oh…” James thought about grabbing Duke and going home, but the big dog had wandered off. Instead, he kicked at the dirt beneath his feet as an awkwardness the two of the had no name for loomed between them.
“Yeah…” Bernd sighed. Lonely, the idea of James going home upset him as much as his mother dying, His lower lips trembled as he tried not to cry.
As if to underscore Bernd’s sadness, there was a roll of distant thunder and the rain picked up in intensity. He looked at James and the two of them ran for the shelter of the old stable. Out of breath and drenched to the skin the two of them somehow managed to laugh themselves silly.
“You wanna see if they have any good stuff in here?” Bernd opened one of the empty stalls and poked his head inside. His father had warned him about playing in here, not that he paid such warnings any mind. This place held the allure of the forbidden to the little four year old and having a friend along to share the adventure made it all the better.
“Okay.” James followed him inside the stall.
It was surprisingly bare, aside from an old hay rack that was mounted on the wall at pony height, along with brackets to hold a water bucket and feed bin. The two of them looked at each other and shrugged. The other stalls had more of the same, which was nothing. They wandered into the old tack room where Bernd spotted an old pony-sized horseshoe. James picked up a hook that had fallen off the wall. With a bit of imagination, their finds became guns and the two little boys chased each other around the old stable, “shooting” at each other and some imaginary foes.
When the rain let up a bit, they went outside and splashed in the puddles. They also dug in the mud with their “guns,” each one trying their best to dig the biggest hole. Damp and covered in mud and grime, they were busy, building a mud castle, when Wolfgang ventured out to go look for his eldest.
“Bernd! Bernd! Where are you?” Wolfgang called out as he searched the area by the house for his missing child. When he did not find him there, he decided to look in the one place, he told him not to play in, the old stable. As he walked through the wet grass, he hoped his son had enough sense to stay out of the stable and out of the rain. It didn’t take long to find him, although Wolfgang was surprised to see him playing with another child. “Bernd! Why didn’t you answer me when I called you?”
“Oh hi, Vati.” Bernd looked up at him. “Me and Amber are playing.”
“I see that.” Wolfgang frowned as both children were covered in mud.
“Hi, Mr. Vati,” James said.
“Hi, Amber.” Wolfgang sighed. “Come, let’s hose you two off, before you come inside and then we can call your mother.”
The boys looked at each other and James looked a bit distressed over the thought of Bernd’s father talking to his mother, especially since the man thought he was Amber, but the look Bernd gave him quelled his anxiety. They shrugged.
“Can we have some cookies?”
“Yes, you can have cookies when you’re all cleaned off, Bernd.”
“Come, Amber,” he said as he got up. Taking James’ hand, they followed Wolfgang back to the house.
Wolfgang led them around to the back, where he had a large galvanized washtub. He turned on the hose and started filling it. “Wait here, while I get you both some clean clothes and some towels.”
“Okay.” The two of them watched as the old washtub slowly filled up.
Wolfgang returned a few minutes later with two towels and the clean clothes, which he set aside. He took off Bernd’s muddy clothes, leaving them in a pile to be hosed off, before he brought them inside.. He popped him the tub once he was naked; then he helped Amber get undressed too. Wolfgang was very surprised when she turned out to be a little boy. “Amber?”
James looked up at him. “I’m James.”
“Oh…” Wolfgang picked him up and put him in the tub.
“Yeah, Amber’s a game we like to play, Vati.” Bernd smiled.
James nodded. He splashed some water on Bernd, who splashed him back. They played in the wash tub, rinsing off the residual mud.
“Come here, boys,” Wolfgang said. He had turned the hose back on and when they moved closer to him, he had them close their eyes and hang their heads over the side of the tub. Wolfgang carefully hosed the mud out of their hair. While they should have been plopped into the bathtub in the house, this quick bath outside would have to do. “Okay, boys, time to come out and get dressed.”
“Oh…” Bernd whined. A reminder about the cookies, had them out, dried and dressed. It was not long before Wolfgang had them playing quietly inside, while Baby Dieter slept.
“I need to go outside and get your clothes; I’ll be right back,” Wolfgang said. He quickly went outside just as it started to rain again. He gathered the clothes and brought them inside, and washed them, while the kids played. By the time they were ready for the dryer, both boys were napping peacefully in their blanket fort. Wolfgang smiled as he made himself some coffee. Outside the rain picked up again, and instead of feeling sad about it, he was happy Bernd had made a new friend and now had someone to play with.

Date: 2015-08-11 08:03 pm (UTC)I remember visiting my granny when I was little & she was having the one bathroom in the house remolded & we had to take baths in a wash tub. It was fun. :D
Thanks. Having a dad who's a shithead, gave birth to Wolfgang being a nice patient man, who never yells, or gets violent, or nasty, & my dad can be NASTY too when he wanted to be. *sighs* Wolfie can be firm when he needs to be, or else Bernd would probably be totally out of control. XD (he's different form the Wolfgang in "Blue Moon", eh? ;p)
Thanks! I'm glad you do! :D
