Halloween Bingo 25 (Blackout!)
Oct. 30th, 2015 11:23 pmTitle: Horsey
Prompt: Broomstick
Fandom: Original
Characters: Bernd, Amber, Fritz
Word count: 322
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd makes Fritz a hobby horse out of an old broomstick
Author’s note: Thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this for me. Please note that Amber also belongs to her.
Bernd took the old broom outside to his father’s workshop. After securing the broomstick in the vise, he cut off a bit of the top. He sanded the rough edges before heading back inside. Sitting down at kitchen table, he took an old black sock and stuffed it full of fiberfill he bought at the craft store along with some other things he needed for his project. Bernd placed the broomstick into the sock’s opening and tacked it to the broomstick with a couple of tiny nails, covering them with some black ribbon that he wrapped around it.
Bernd threaded a needle and carefully sewed a pair of black buttons on the side of the sock. He also sewed on some ears that he cut from a piece of felt onto the sock. He looked at his creation, pleased it was starting to look like the hobby horse of his childhood memory. As a way to keep him out of his mother’s hair so that she could tend to Bernd’s newborn little brother, his father had made him a hobby horse from an old broom.
Bernd wrapped some yarn around a book, cutting it off every so often until he had a large pile of yarn. He then sewed it to the “horse” as a mane. A pair of leather bootlaces became a bridle and he was done. Bernd grinned as he admired his handiwork. It had the same homemade look as the one in his memory and he hoped Fritz would like it as much as he had loved playing with his.
Bernd need not have worried. When Fritz came home from nursery school, Bernd gave him his first horse, much to Amber’s amusement, as Bernd had to demonstrate what to do with it. Fritz loved it, especially when Bernd made himself one with the other sock. Father and son spent many happy hours racing around the house on their “steeds.”
