The soft hum and whir of the machines that kept her mother alive greeted Charlie upon entering her hospital room. She sat next to her mother’s bed and pulled her copy of The Hobbit out of her well worn backpack. Her mother’s injuries had healed long ago, except for the damage to her brain. Charlie reached out, briefly squeezing her mother’s hand, before opening the book and turning to where she had left off.
“Bilbo had escaped the goblins, but he did not know where he was. He had lost his hood, cloak, food, pony, his buttons and his friends…”
