Wolfgang was washing the breakfast dishes while listening to the radio. He sang along to the various Christmas songs. It made the work go faster and he was just putting the last plate away, when Greta entered the kitchen.
“Was machst du, Old Man?” Greta said. Her newborn, Maria, had just fallen asleep, so she decided to grab something to eat, before napping herself.
“Nothing.” Wolfgang’s lips curled up in a ghost of a smirk. “I’ll have a blue Christmas without you…” he sang along with Elvis when the song started playing. “I’ll be so blue just thinking about you…”
Greta smiled. “Not bad, Old Man.”
“Danke.” He moved closer to her as he sang. Gathering her in his arms, they slow danced in the kitchen. “You’ll be doin’ all right, with your Christmas of white…”
“But I’ll have a blue, blue Christmas…” they sang. The song finished and they were still slow dancing during the next one.
“You still miss her?” She said, referring to his late wife.
“Sometimes,” Wolfgang said. He let go of Greta and stepped back. The silence briefly stretched between them. “I wish you could have met her,” he said softly. “I think you’d have liked each other.” He smiled; a hint of sadness in his eyes.
“I think so too.” Greta reached up and cupped his cheek. Gently pulling his head down, she kissed his other cheek. “If you ever want to talk about her…”
“Danke. I’ll be sure to take you up on the offer.” His smile was less sad now.
“Gute. Now out of my way, Old Man, I’m hungry!” She playfully pushed him out of the way.
“Yes, Ma’am!” He chuckled as he got out of her way.
