Title: My New Favorite Holiday
Prompt: National Day of the Horse
Fandom: original
Characters: Bernd, Amber
Word count: 350
Rating: PG
Summary: Bernd gets up in front of the class to tell them about a holiday, which was a class assignment…
Genre: slice of life
Author’s notes: Thanks go out to my beta, Kat, for pinking this for me. Please note Amber belongs to her.
Bernd got up in front of the class. “My holiday is National Day of the Horse. I know it sounds like I made this up ‘cause I love horses, but it’s a real thing. It’s celebrated on December thirteenth and it’s ‘cause these senators Bill Campbell, Oren Hatch, Mike DeWine, and Mary Landrieu got together and decided that horses made a contribution to our country. They did that way back in October of 2004 and on November eighteenth, it passed and now we have this awesome holiday!” He grinned.
“Horses are really cool! I’ve had one since I was like twelve and my horse is like my best friend. It’s hard work taking care of one, but the rewards are huge and I, ummm… Well, ummm… If it weren’t for horses we wouldn’t have moved west as it would have been too hard to explore on foot. And umm… last year when we went to New York City to see all the holiday stuff, well, there were cops on horseback! It was really cool. You’d think in a big city, they’d drive cars or something, but the officer told me they use horses as it’s easier for crowd control and they can see over the crowds of people. I got my picture taken with them.” He smiled and fished his cell phone out of his pocket. Bernd thumbed through his pictures until he found the one he was looking for and held it up. “I hope you can see it, but that’s me and the cops. And this is me and my horse, Blitzkrieg.” He smiled as he looked for the selfie he took with his horse and held it up for everyone to see.
“Anyway, ummm… horses are good for the economy, look at the pony rides at the fair and the hay rides. And they were the inspiration for carousels and, and, ummm… We took a carriage ride in Central Park!” he grinned at Amber. “And horses are just fun to ride and be around. I give riding lessons over the summer. And when I was little I wanted to be a jockey.”
Someone muttered, “You’re still little,” followed by the low murmur of laughter. The teacher hushed them.
“Go on, Bernd,” she said.
“Anyway… I just thought this would be an awesome holiday and I’m going to celebrate it from now on.” He grinned and sat down.
“It was good, Bernd.” Amber said as the teacher called the next student up to talk about their holiday.
“Danke!” He sat back and listened, while thoughts of how he was going to celebrate his newfound holiday danced in his head.

Date: 2016-11-27 07:52 pm (UTC)THERE ARE SOOOOO MANY OF THESE WEIRD LITTLE "HOLIDAYS"
Nearly something for every day and if the Recreation Therapists can come up with a craft or activity to link to them I get to illustrate them. Horse day would be fun to do.
