*is home*
I'm back from my trip to Vegas. Gave back all the money I won playing slots. XD I feel like crap. I'm not sure if cuz I barely slept on the red-eye home, or I picked something up. XD It was miserably HOT there, but a miracle happened. It actually rained there! o.0 And I mean RAIN!! We came out of a restaurant & there was a lil sprinkle & next thing we knew it was POURING. XD Bad news about that is there were places that were flooded, cuz they couldn't handle the rain. I also thought I saw that Kardashian idiot with the HUGE arse. XD She was at the pool in a skin tight dress, was only there for a few minutes, before leaving. She did ahve a store in the Mirage where I was staying, so who knows. If it wasn't her, there's someone else out there with a HUGE arse, the poor thing. XD I also went to see the Cirque du Soliel (sp?) show "Ka." it was really good! :D
I also started reading "Game of Thrones." It's pretty good, I like the large cast of characters & how each chapter was devoted to a single character's POV of the events that were happening around them. I really enjoy the chapters about Tyrion. He's a hoot! :D I'm also a bit disappointed that Jon Snow is not really a main character. I remember when the series first came out, there was all this fanart of him. XD Oh well. *shrugs* What I don't like about it, is George R.R. Martin's way of hitting the reader over the head with things. Good characters are GOOD, while evil characters are EVIL, this could be why I like Tyrion, as so far, I'm only 2/3 of the way through the first book in the series, he comes across as neither good nor evil. He's sassy, which at times gets him in trouble, and other times he's serious & I think he's the most real of the characters so far. The other thing I don't like is how the man over describes something to the point where I wonder if he's being paid by the word. >.> That's got me skimming parts & I'm sure I've missed something important. ^^; And then there's his over use of the words "and" & "then." ;p So we get these long run-ons that would have been better with a few commas & periods. Again, I wonder if the man gets paid by the word. ;p Seriously, while "ands" are important, & you need them, "thens" not so much. I came across one sentence, where it felt like there was a million "ands" & I know there was 2 "thens" in it. At that point, I wondered if he accidentally sent in his rough draft for publication. ;p If I'm "pinking" a PUBLISHED book as I'm reading, there's a serious issue there. XD So will I keep reading? Yeah, the bones are good & maybe, just maybe, they'll either stop paying him by the word, or his editor will grow a set & tell him to fix his shit. ;p Somehow I doubt it. XD Now to hunt down the series & watch it online, since I don't have HBO or whatever fancy channel (pay extra for) it's on & see how the show compares to the book. But what about spoilers? I have no problem with them, when I CHOOSE to spoil myself, it's only when they're unexpected, it bothers me. XD Anyway, as someone who writes for fun, what I take away from this is this: a) watch my sentence structure, b) don't hit readers over the head with stuff, whether it's describing someone's looks (once should be enough, maybe a handful more if it's an epic with a large cast) or their clothes, c) if it's important keep it in, but don't bury it in nonsense, d) try to write characters that feel real; no one is truly EVIL, nor are they truly GOOD, e) women are not all whores, queens/princesses, crazy, or stupid/foolish, f) for every nekid woman, there should be a nekid man, in other words, don't throw in gratuitous nudity just cuz you can, especially when you treat your female characters so poorly in other respects.

I honestly couldn't make it through the Songs of Fire and Ice. I tried. I found it very misogynistic
no subject
Yeah? Misogynistic! That's the word I was looking for earlier! It is very misogynistic. *sighs* We'll see how far I get. *has the first two books*
no subject
I was stunned at how misogynistic it is because the person who really really wanted me to read it is was more feminist than I am.
no subject
Yeah? That's interesting. And they liked it? o.0
no subject
they did. I have no idea why
no subject
Silly Kanda! XD
Weirdness. XD Unless they felt the medieval setting excused it, since women were mostly pawns in the power struggle between the nobility. Or maybe as the story moves along, he stops being so misogynistic? The bones of the story is good, it's just his execution that needed some POLISH. ;p

Cats, they love losing it at Midnight
I know it's pretty rapey later on (at least on the show and I'm betting the books). Also hello casual incest. Martin's been around for at least 30 if not 40 years, I think they just let him do what he wants (much like Anne Rice, Stephen King and Rowling)

XD
Yeah? I found the show & I'm watching it now. There's a lot more T & A in the show than the book. XD Yeah, really. XD That must be it. XD Well, hopefully, he'll wrap things up in a good way by the time he finishes writing this epic. XD

Yeah let's hope

Yeah!

Hey was there anything new or cool going on in Vegas. I want to set another story there.

Hmmm... Let's see. I think New York, New York got a facelift, I couldn't say as the closest I got to it was the MGM for the Cirque show. The pirate show at the TI was replaced with a CVS, like they need more pharmacies XD & there's something to do with the Avengers above it. I peeked in & saw souvenir stuff for the Avengers. I think it's something interactive. I wasn't interested in looking any more than I did. The Wynne has a small, dancing water fountain out front on the corner. It seems to be continuous, unlike Bellagio's. Gordon Ramsey's got a Fish & chip place opening soon, I think next month, but I could be wrong. I know it's this year though. I visited the wetlands, which is really cool. There's a cement path that runs through it, as well as hiking trails. Desert landscapes combined with tall water plants, a rushing river, several small ponds & your typical fauna. I saw a bunny, a couple of turtles in the pond, water birds. They have a visitors' center, but we bypassed it to just head out on the trail. And this year is Caesar's 50th anniversary. So Caesar had a special red velvet sash with gold marking it, & so did a few other statues. Down by Balley's they have a new lil shopping district. It's all these little kiosk style shops, like fancy soaps, t-shirts, we got Dole Whips at this outdoor bar. It reminded me of the Winter village by the Bryant Park carousel, although this was bigger. It's tucked into that area where you get off the pedestrian overpass escalators back to the casino. We stayed in the Mirage, since my grandparents really didn't have room for us, & I took the tram to the TI, then walked across to the Fashion Show Mall for a food court lunch, then I walked across to the Wynne & watched the fountain. Then I walked over to the Flamingo to see the cockitiels, but all that was left of them was a sign that used to tell a bit about them. Their cage was totally gone. So I walked outside to see the birds, but it was too hot & they were mostly asleep. So I cut through to the Bellagio for gelato, & walked back to the Mirage. I like the Goldfish game & there's a new version of the slots called "Goldfish Deluxe." And I played the new GoT game. That may have been there before; I just noticed it now. XD I also think they have a new giant slot about TBBT. The burger place is now called LVB & there's some minor construction near the tellers' cage & where you'd go to see the Beatle's Love show. The pool is nice. :D Oh & Revolution, has been changed. It's now a lounge with burgers & "fenced" off so kids aren't going in there. Revolution has seats in its name, so it was easy for kids to wander in what used to be a bar. XD So I would say, it's mostly minor things here & there. More CVSs there's a new one across the street from the Bellagio. The construction/face lift for the Cromwell is finished. From the part of the strip where I was, I really couldn't see anything that stuck out as new.

And GoT is new. My casino just got it too. That one takes tons of money to play.
thanks. I'm trying to do a contemporary romance set partially there and partially back in COlumbus, two guys fall in love at an anime con
no subject
Aaah... It's a penny slot, but I think it's 50 cents a "pull", so9 lot of money sounds about right. That said, it really is fun to play, especially when I got the bonus & the dragon eggs. It was like a mini movie, you got to "fly" over the different lands.
You're welcoem! Oh how fun!! I wonder if it'll be held in the convention center. Which is down the road, behind the Palazzo & across from the Wynne. ;p I know there is a big anime con there. I've never gone though. Too far & expensive a weekend. XD
no subject
there's two anime cons but right now I can't find any of my notes. I thought I had started part of it but apparently not.
no subject
Yeah? DOH! XD I hate when that happens. XD That can be a good thing, cuz now you're free to come up with something better. :D
no subject
Here's hoping. I wish I could concentrate and write more. I'm just struggling with it.
no subject
Yeah. Maybe you should do what I do when it doesn't flow. I just let it sit & come back to it at a later date, unless you have a deadline. XD Do something else creative, even if it's just drawing a bunch of circles on a piece of paper. The mindlessness of that should unblock you, while getting your creative juices flowing. :D
no subject
That's good advice. IN my case it's less a block and more me pissing about online and not making time for my writing.
no subject
Thanks. Please, I do that too! XD And I've spent days at a time surfing the net & watching youtube & doing everything except what I should be doing. XD Good thing is, it'll pass & then you'll start writing, which usually happens whenever I read something good. It somehow inspires me to start writing. :D

I'm finding my issues with playing on the net and doing nothing are growing and growing
no subject
Yeah? XD Then try setting a timer. Work on your fic for say a half hour, then play for a half hour. Keep doing doing that, with playing being your "reward" for getting work done.

Thanks for putting up the review. I have been considering starting the series for a while, but with seven books (and counting) and them all so big, I had been hesitating.
no subject
You're welcome. It's really not that bad a book, it's just that I feel as a paid professional author, he should write a bit better than he does. ;p I can deal with the 2 dimentionalness of some of the characters & how misogynistic he is, it's just that sometimes he gets a bit much in places & that's mostly with his over descriptiveness. "He was a tall man with blue eyes, black hair and he looked totally awesome in his black leather doublet, purple breeches and white leather boots." I feel if it's that important to know down to the last detail what someone's wearing, then there's got to be a reason for it. When no reason shows up after, telling us a few times about it, then it feels like a cheat. So my guess would be to borrow it from the library & see if you like it.
no subject
Ahhh.

That said I now own books 1, 2, 3, & 4, & there's like 5 out with a planned 7. XD So I do like it on some level.

It's okay, we can't all like the same things. :D Since I haven't seen it yet, I'm not sure if I'll love it or hate it. XD All in all it's not a bad book, but it's not a great one either. XD
