Amber woke up, her head pounding and her throat on fire. She was achy all over and freezing, and she just wanted to burrow under the covers and go back to sleep. But she was out of Tylenol and needed more water, so she dragged her sorry arse out of bed and trudged up the basement stairs to the kitchen. Reaching the top of the stairs, she heard voices and hoped they would have the sense to leave the place so she could get what she needed in peace. While she knew everyone meant well, Amber was tired of all the fussing. It was just the flu, no biggie. Sighing softly, she opened the door.

The sight that greeted her made her blink. Amber stood there, wondering if she was hallucinating. Bernd had a pot of something in his hand, black smudges all over his face and white shirt. Amber barked out a little laugh that sounded more like a cough as her husband looked like a demented panda bear. It took her a minute to realize he had been singing along to the radio.

“What are you doing up?” Bernd set the pot down on the stove and hurried over to her. He placed a cool hand on her forehead. “You’re burning up! Go sit!” He fussed over her like an old mother hen.

Amber gave her head a little shake and regretted it instantly as it made her head spin. “Need water and Tylenol,” she croaked.

“Sit and I’ll get it for you.” Bernd set the pot down and went to get the Tylenol and a glass of water. He quickly brought it over to her.

“Where’s everyone?” Amber took the proffered glass, and holding out her hand, he shook two pills into it. She popped them into her mouth, washing them down with a mouthful of water.

“Greta and Vati took the kids to park.”

“And Minky?”

“She’s at work.” Bernd went and got out a plate. He dumped the contents of pot onto it. He carried the plate and a fork over to her. “You should eat something.” Bernd set the plate down in front of her.

Amber looked at the grey and black mass, and closed her eyes. “What is it?”

“Comfort food.” Bernd beamed at her.

Amber thought it looked like shit. She opened her eyes and she bravely poked at it with her fork. “Yeah?”

Bernd nodded. “I made you that blackaroni and cheese you liked.”

“Oh…” Amber looked at it again. Now that she thought about it, it did bear a passing resemblance to it. She scooped up a bit onto her fork and ate it. It was still bland, but she could taste the “love” he put into it. She ate a few more bites. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I’ll eat the rest later. I need to lie down.”

“You okay?” Bernd shot her an anxious look.

“I still feel like shit, but the comfort food helped.” She smiled at him as she stood up.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Amber shuffled over to him and put her head on his shoulder. “Thanks…”

Bernd hugged her. “Feel better and be careful going downstairs.”

“Yes, Mutti,” she teased.

They smiled in relief at each other. As Amber shuffled towards the basement door, Bernd called out, “I’ll be down to check on you as soon as I clean up the kitchen.”

“Okay…” Amber chuckled softly to herself. Judging by the small disaster area that was the kitchen whenever her husband cooked anything, she would have a nice nap by the time he made his way downstairs.

Thankful the Tylenols had kicked in as she reached the basement and her room, Amber crawled into bed. It was not long, before she had drifted off to sleep, dreaming she was married to a panda.
