“We need to paint the apartment,” Valentino said. He smiled and sipped his coffee. “Didi, are you listening to me?” He leaned across the table, and hooking a finger into the top of the newspaper his husband was reading, he pulled it down. His smile grew impish. “Well?”

Dieter swallowed thickly as he set the newspaper down. He felt his cheeks heating up, when he realized he really had not been paying attention to his husband. “Tino, I ummm…”

Tino chuckled. “Just as I thought!” He playfully wagged his finger at his husband. “You’re not paying attention.” His bright smile quickly morphed into a pout.

“I’m sorry, Tino.” Didi reached across the table, and placing his hand on top of Tino’s, he gave it a gentle squeeze. “What did you say?”

“I was thinking we should paint the apartment.”

“But…” Didi frowned.

“I cleared it with the landlord, if that’s what you’re worried about. As long as we paint it white when we leave, we can paint it whatever color we want.”

“Okay.” Didi folded the newspaper. “What color do you want? And where?”

Tino grinned. “Cornflower blue… like your eyes.” He reached across the table with his free hand, and tenderly caressed his husband’s cheek.

Didi sputtered wordlessly as his cheeks heated up.

“And I thought we’d start in the bedroom and see how that goes before we paint anywhere else.”

Finding his voice, Didi said, “But I thought white walls were the best for showing off artwork.” He frowned. “Won’t your paintings look odd on blue colored walls?”

“Yes, art looks the best on plain white walls, which is why galleries are white, because there’s nothing there to distract you from the beauty of the art,” Tino said. “But hanging art on a colored wall isn’t going to suddenly make it look awful. People hang art on painted walls all the time. Remember that little museum we went to last week? All that art was hung on colored walls. I bet you didn’t even realize it.”

“Ummm… no.” Didi frowned. He had been more interested in watching his husband’s reaction to the art that he only gave it a cursory glance at best, longer if Tino’s comments warranted it.

“There you go! So what do you say? Should we get dressed and go to the hardware store?” Tino pushed his chair back and stood up.

“Ummm… I guess so.” Didi picked up his mug and finished his coffee. He stood up to go. “Come. Let’s go move some furniture.”

Tino laughed. “Yeah? You know I was just kidding about the walls and the paint and everything.”

Didi nodded. “I know, but I’m not.”

“Hunh?” Tino blinked. “What’s the point of moving the…” he trailed off when it him. “Oh!”

“Yeah.” Didi grinned and Tino was sure he saw his normally taciturn husband briefly waggle his eyebrows.

“What are you waiting for?” Tino grabbed Didi’s hand, leading him towards their bedroom. “We have some furniture to move!”
