Author’s note 2: “Inchworm” is a song by Frank Loesser for the movie Hans Christian Andersen and it was sung by actor Danny Kaye. Bernd sings a line from it at the end.

Bernd stalked through the grass like a man on a mission. The seven year old was hunting for inchworms after his music teacher played an old song for them. It came from some movie musical that Bernd had never heard of, but he thought it was cool, because how many songs are there about bugs?

Disappointed to find out they didn’t have any marigolds, Bernd decided to look at all the flowers Vati had in the garden. If the inchworms in the song liked measuring so much, maybe they would like ones his father had. He turned over every blossom he could find and found ants, various bugs and beetles, a butterfly or two and some bees, but no inchworms. Bernd did find a fuzzy caterpillar, but it refused to measure the flower he put it on.

While he did not give up hope of finding an inchworm, Bernd was getting hot, tired, and thirsty. He made a face at the garden, before stomping back into the house. He pouted and sat at the kitchen table, burying his face on his folded arms. Bernd growled at his baby brother. “Go away, Didi!”

“Bernd,” Wolfgang said as he picked up his youngest. “What’s the matter?”

“We don’t have any marigolds, so the inchworms won’t come, Vati!” Bernd looked up at his father.

“I’m sorry,” Wolfgang said as he sat Dieter down at the table. He bustled around the kitchen, getting a snack together for his children. “Go wash up, Bernd.” When his eldest child returned, he said, “Here,” before setting a plate of cookies in front of each child, followed by a cup of milk.

Bernd drank some milk. He nibbled on a cookie, the stupid inchworms momentarily forgotten.

“Bernd? Would you like it if Didi and I helped you find some inchworms?” Wolfgang bit into the cookie Didi gave him.

Bernd shrugged. “Maybe…”

“Why are you looking for them?”

“They’re good at math, Vati! The song the teacher played today says so.”

“Really?” Wolfgang was mildly surprised to hear that. He wondered if he needed to visit Bernd’s teacher and get an updated progress report. His eldest had been having trouble in school and he wondered if his son’s new glasses were helping. Maybe I should ask her if she can move his seat up front…

Bernd nodded. “They know stuff, Vati! Like two and two are four, and four and four are eight!! The stupid caterpillars in class don’t know anything!! They just crawl around and eat the food we give them!”

“I see.”

“So I want to find an inchworm!”

“What if we find you a tutor instead?”

“A what?” Bernd looked at his father like he had six heads.

“A tutu, Bear…” Didi said. He made the most serious little toddler face ever as he reached for another cookie.

“Oh…” Bernd frowned. He had no idea what a tutu was, and besides, whatever it was, it was not an inchworm.

“I’ll call your teacher on Monday.”

“Okay.” I wonder if Miss Smith knows where I can find some inchworms… Bernd grinned.

“Good,” Wolfgang said in German. “Why don’t you go outside and play with Didi, like a good boy?”

“Okay, Vati! Come, Didi!” Bernd helped his brother down, and taking him by the hand, they went outside to play. “Let’s go look for inchworms!”

Wolfgang shook his head as he washed the plates and cups. He was putting them away in the cabinet when he heard the mudroom door slam shut.

“HEY,VATI!!” Bernd came running into the kitchen, followed by Didi.

“Indoor voice.”

Bernd took a deep breath. He was so excited, he could barely contain himself, but somehow he managed to lower his volume. “Me and Didi found one!! Look!!” he held up his hand and there was an inchworm crawling on it.

Wolfgang laughed. “Good job! Now take him outside and play with him there.”

“Okay! Come, Didi!” Bernd took off again, slamming the mudroom door.

Didi followed as fast as his chubby little legs would go. He had fun poking around the backyard, even if the bees scared him. He found his older brother, sitting in the grass singing to the caterpillar.

Inchworm, inchworm measuring the marigolds...
