Bernd lay in bed, hugging a rabbit plushie; Amber had given him. He was numb inside and all he wanted to do was sleep so he could escape life for a while. The radio played softly and he ignored it for the most part until he noticed the dulcet sound of a piano, followed by a rush of wind. The singer’s haunting soprano drew his attention. Bernd listened to the lyrics, his cheeks wet with fresh tears.

“Wake me up inside… Wake me up inside… Call my name and save me from the dark… Bid my blood to run… Before I come undone… Save me from the nothing I’ve become…”

Bernd choked back a sob. She knows how I feel… He let out a ragged breath.

“Frozen inside, without your touch… Without your love, darling… Only you are my life… Among the dead… I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems… Got to open my eyes to everything… Don’t let me die here… Bring, me, to, life…”

Bernd rolled over and reached for a crumpled photo Amber had given him. It was a blurry picture of a family and on the back of it; Amber had written, “I love you, Bernd.” I love you too, Amber… I just hate that you and Vati make me go to therapy… It never makes me feel better… He hugged his plushie tightly.

“Bring me to life…”

A male singer snarled, “I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside…”

“Bring me to life…” sang the soprano.

Bernd whined as the song finished. He wished Amber was here to hold him until he finally did fall asleep. He reached over and put the photo back. He also turned off the radio, the next song that had come on the radio irritating him to no end. While it briefly chased away his feelings of hopelessness, the sudden silence brought overwhelming waves of sadness. He curled up into a ball. Amber…

The sound of a soft knock on his bedroom door, followed by the sound of the door opening and closing, made Bernd freeze. He lay there, pretending to be asleep, in case it was his father checking up on him. The last thing he wanted was another fight like the one that happened at dinner.

“Bernd…?”

Relief washed over him. She’s here! he thought as he scooted over next to the wall to make room for her. He held the blankets up, and taking the hint, she crawled in bed with him.

“You okay?” Amber said softly.

Bernd frowned. He was not okay, and yet, he was as he drew comfort from her presence. “Kinda…” he whispered.

“You want to talk about it?”

He shook his head. Bernd was done talking about his feelings. Doing so, only made him feel worse and it was why he hated therapy so much. All he wanted was to lie there with his head pillowed on her ample bosom and be held.

Amber sighed softly. She also hated those days he went to therapy as everything seemed to set Bernd on edge. Like tonight when Vati was relating some good news about his niece having a baby and Didi replying how nice it would be to go visit his cousin, but unfortunately he would not be off from school for another month, so he suggested Bernd go with Amber instead. Of course, Bernd blew up over that, prompting Vati to get involved, resulting in a huge fight and ending with Bernd sulking in his room. While on the one hand she was glad that Vati was more understanding about his son’s need to lash out, she still wished these fights never happened in the first place as they were draining on everyone.

“Come here…” she said softly as she held her arm up so he could snuggle in. True to form, Bernd did just that and she held him close. They lay there, each alone with their thoughts.

Bernd shifted in her arms to look up at her. “I’m okay now,” he said softly.

“You sure? I can stay a bit longer if you want.”

“Yeah…” He sat up. Looking over at her as she also sat up, he said, “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” She leaned over and kissed his cheek, before getting out of bed. “Good night.”

“Night, Amber.” Bernd lay back down, and clutching his rabbit plushie, he rolled onto his side and turned on the radio. “Sleep well.”

“You too, Bernd.” She left his room, closing the door behind her.

Bernd closed his eyes. Some of the sadness and numbness had left him, and the sleep that had eluded him soon over took him as one of Amber’s favorite songs played softly on the radio.
