They sat outside the yurt, waiting for the stars come out. There was a bit of a chill to air as daytime summer warmth gave way to cool autumn nights. Bernd sipped his marshmallow laden hot chocolate and blew on it, before talking a sip. He looked over at Amber and smiled. Amber was busy watching the night sky and missed it.
“Earth to Amber,” Bernd teased. He sipped his hot chocolate again.
“What?” She finally looked over at him.
“Your cocoa’s getting cold.”
“Oh…” She sipped it. “Nope, it’s still hot,” Amber said. She licked her lips and looked at the sky.
“Good.” Bernd fished out a marshmallow and ate it. He followed her gaze upwards. “Hey! I think the stars are finally coming out!”
Amber rolled her eyes. “I think that’s an airplane, numbnuts.” She grinned. “But that looks like a star.” She pointed to a faint flickering light in the night sky.
“Awesomeness!! Let’s make a wish!”
“How old are you? Five?” she teased.
Bernd looked over at her. The corner of his mouth twitched upwards into his trademark smirk. “Six.”
Amber laughed. Looking up again at the night sky, she closed her eyes and made a wish, while Bernd did the same.
“Whatchya wish for?”
“I’m not telling you! Then my wish won’t come true,” she said, her tone intentionally childish to fit their silly mood,
He pouted. “I’ll tell you mine,” he wheedled, giving her his best cute and innocent look, as he leaned towards her.
Amber rolled her eyes at him. “Still not telling.” She sipped her cocoa.
“Fine!” he huffed and drank his cocoa.
“I’ll give you a hint.”
“Yeah?”
Amber nodded. Leaning towards him, she kissed his cheek.
Bernd’s eyes went wide. “You didn’t!” He drank his cocoa, wiping his chocolate mustache on the back of his hand.
“What?” Amber finished her cocoa.
“I think we wished for the same thing.”
“Oh really?”
“Yup!” He stood up and offered her his hand, the stars forgotten.
Amber took it and let him pull her to her feet. “I think you’re right,” she said as she led him inside. Little Fritz was already sound asleep. It was one of those late summer nights were it was cool enough to sleep outside in the yurt together. The night had been a magical one that Amber wasn’t ready to end yet. She hoped Bernd felt the same. Judging by the look on his face, she had nothing to worry about.
They stepped inside the yurt and it was not long before they were naked in bed, and lazily making love to each other. When they were finally sated, they cuddled together and looked up at the night sky through the oculus in the middle of the yurt’s roof.
“There’s more stars out now,” Bernd said.
“Yup.” Amber snuggled closer.
“Make a wish?”
“No need to, mine from before already came true…”
“Mine di-” the rest of his words were swallowed in her kiss, not that he minded. If Amber wanted to make love “under the stars” all night long, he was more than happy to oblige. If all she wanted to do now was roll over and go to sleep, well, there would be more stars tomorrow…
