Lady Edwina Harrington walked down the slight incline into the park, a lace gloved hand lightly resting on the banister as she descended. Her other hand held her black lace parasol. Not that she actually needed it. The late autumn sun tried its best to shine through an overcast sky, but could not manage more than an eerie glow. It was the kind of sky that promised snow. It was possible, as the trees had lost their leaves, and as Edwina entered the park, her feet made a soft crunch as she walked along.

The cool temperature seemed to keep everyone away, not that Edwina minded. She preferred the park when it was empty. A young widow three times over, most people thought she was a bit odd, especially since she pretty much kept to herself. The few friends she did have; thought she was rather eccentric, but very sweet once one took the time to get to know her. Edwina’s dearest friend was the Lady Jessica Ellsworth. The two had met at the funeral for Edwina’s second husband, who was a distant cousin of Jessica’s.

Edwina strolled along the path, enjoying her solitude and the spooky haze that settled over the empty park. She lifted her skirts with her hand as she ambled through the fallen leaves that littered the path. Despite her slow pace, it did not take her long to reach the duck pond at the north end of the park. The ducks and geese were long gone and so was the pair of swans that had taken up residence there during the summer. Edwina strolled over to one of the benches that ringed the pond and sat down to wait for her friend Jessica. While she waited a small flock of pigeons gathered at her feet. Edwina opened her purse and took out a wrapped bundle. She opened it, revealing a couple of digestive biscuits. She crumpled one, letting the crumbs fall at her feet. The pigeons happily pecked at them, until they were disturbed by a hungry squirrel. She laughed as she threw some larger pieces of cookie at him.

“Edwina darling! How are you?” Jessica said as she approached her friend from behind.

“I’m good, thank you. How are you doing, Jessica?” Edwina said with a smile as she turned to look over the back of the bench she was sitting on. She stood up when her friend came around to greet her. They kissed each other’s cheeks.

“I’m so sorry about Alfred.” Jessica patted her friend’s hand. “You know I would have been there if I could.”

“I know, and thank you.” Edwina sighed. Her late husband Alfred was a lot closer to her age than her two previous husbands and she had fully expected to grow old with him. Unfortunately, he had caught what people had called the “Ulpash Flu” shortly after Vine Fest had ended. Unlike most, he managed to hold on until the middle of Septem, before succumbing to the disease.

“Are you alright?”

Edwina nodded.

“Shall we go?” Jessica asked. “I know you love this creepy place, but it’s terribly chilly here.” She shivered and pulled her caplet close.

Her friend could not help smiling. “How about we go to the tea room and get a cup of tea and those lemon poppy cakes that you love?”

“I like the sound of that!”

“Good.”

Arm in arm, the two friends left the park and headed towards the tea room. There, they spent the afternoon, catching up on what they had missed in each other’s lives, before going their separate ways.
