Maria put on a warm pullover sweater and her scarf. She grabbed an old woolen blanket to sit on and her book, and headed outside. She made herself comfortable, opened her book, and began to read, while her father and older brother picked apples off the old tree in the backyard.
She looked up as she finished a chapter to see her brother had climbed the tree, while her father stood below, trying to catch the ones Fritz threw down to him in a towel. Maria giggled as they looked so funny. She supposed she should mark her place and go pick up the ones lying on the ground, but her Harry potter book as too good, in her opinion to put down. Besides, she needed to catch up to her friends as they liked to talk about the books at lunch and she wanted to join in the fun.
Maria went back to reading, and by the time she had finished another chapter, her brother and father had filled an old milk crate full of apples. “You’re done?” she said as she looked up from her book.
Bernd nodded as he set the crate down.
“Oh… I’m sorry, Vati, I meant to help…”
Before Bernd could reply, Fritz walked over to them and said, “Don’t worry about it, Malaria.” Finishing the apple, he was eating; he tossed the core at his sister’s feet. He honestly did not care that she had not helped. Because he had worked hard, their father was letting him borrow his car. Fritz picked up the crate of apples and headed inside.
“Like your brother said, don’t worry, Sweetie,” Bernd said.
“I know, Vati, but I feel bad, I said I would help.” Maria marked her place and closed her book. She got up and folded the blanket.
Bernd picked up her book. “So what’s this about?”
“It’s about a boy wizard named Harry Potter. All my friends are reading the books and we like to talk about them at lunch.”
“Yeah? Is it good?” he asked even though they both knew he knew the answer to his question.
“It’s very good. Would you like to read it when I’m finished?”
“I’d loved to,” he said as they went inside.
Maria grinned. Now she could not wait to finish the book, so that her father could start reading it. She was sure he would love it as much as she did.
