Bernd left the woods and stood in the street. He looked up at the sky. It was starting to rain again and he was only halfway to Amber’s and James’ house. Just when he thought it had stopped enough for him to go over and hang out with the twins, it started up again, this time heavier than it had before. He was drenched right through his sweatshirt, never mind his feet. Even with avoiding puddles like the plague, he still managed to get them wet. The only upside to this brisk autumn shower, was he did not have to worry about the thunder and lightning of a summer storm. As he slogged down the street, Bernd was beginning to prefer them over the autumn chill.
He hurried across the street, running straight through the puddles this time, figuring he could not get any wetter than he already was. Colder, yes, as he was beginning to shiver. By the time he reached his friends’ house and rang their doorbell, Bernd’s teeth were chattering. He was glad he did not have to wait long, before they opened the door. The fuss they made over him was nice and soon he was dressed in a pair of James’ sweats with a nice warm cup of cocoa in his hands. As far as he was concerned, it made the “long,” wet trek over to see his friends worth it.
