Summary: Didi is too sick to go to the winter formal with Tino…
Author’s note: Special thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this and helping me with a title.
Didi was deliriously happy. He had asked Tino if he would like to go to the winter formal with him and his boyfriend had said, “Yes.” His heart felt like it was going to burst from happiness when Tino blew a kiss at him when they parted to go to class. Although, to look at him as he floated through the remainder of his day, the only indication that he was ecstatic was a shy smile that danced across his lips.
Tino, who was just as happy, was grinning ear to ear. He spent the remainder of his classes, ignoring what the teacher was saying and plotting a trip to the thrift store for a dress for the dance. The only time his expression faltered was when he realized Didi would probably want him to wear a suit. They kept their relationship very low key to the point that most people thought they were just best friends, who liked to hang out together, instead of two people who were dating. Also, Didi was not like his older brother, Bernd, who did not mind attracting attention wherever he went. Didi was shy and reserved, but that was what Tino loved about him. He sighed, and mentally shrugging, he figured he could have just as much fun in a suit as he would in some fluffy confection of a dress.
The morning of the winter formal arrived. Didi woke up with a headache and a scratchy throat. Ignoring it, he muscled through his day, thankful it was only a half day for seniors; the second half being devoted to decorating the gym for the dance. Their graduating class had chosen a fifties sock hop theme, after the popularity of “Grease,” the musical that was put on this year by the drama club. Everyone attending was encouraged to dress like they were from the era so poodle skirts and jeans and white t-shirts would be just as acceptable as dresses covered in tulle and dinner jackets and ties. Didi and Tino decided on tees and jeans. Didi was happy about that as the thought of wearing a suit, while feeling this sick, was not a pleasant one.
He busied himself, helping Tino decorate the tables. He felt hot and cold at the same time as he drifted from table to table. After a while, Tino’s animated chatter blended into the low buzz of multiple conversations. Didi wiped his brow with the back of his hand. He was feeling chilled to the bone and his throat hurt every time he swallowed. He pulled out a chair and sat down. He put his head down on the table and closed his eyes.
“Didi, hand me that centerpiece, please,” Tino said as he fussed with the table he was decorating. “Didi?”
Didi looked up at him. He blinked and mouthed “sorry” at his boyfriend. He felt bad at the look of concern Tino gave him as he hurried over.
“Are you okay?”
Didi shook his head.
Tino put a cool hand on his boyfriend’s cheek. “You’re burning up!” He looked around and spotting one of his friends from art club, he called out, “Hey, Jenny! Come’re!”
“Hey, guys. What’s up, Tino?”
“Didi’s sick and we need to go home.”
“Crap! You gonna be okay for tonight?” Jenny said.
“I don’t know. I’m sorry; I just want to go home and lie down.” Didi looked so pathetic; Jenny took her phone out her back pocket and handed it to Tino. “Why don’t you call his parents to come and get him?”
“Thanks.” Tino dialed Didi’s house, hoping someone would be home.
“Thanks,” Didi repeated. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s a sucky time to get sick, but what can you do? Hey! I know, why don’t I ask the janitors to save the photo-booths and you guys can take a pic in them when you come to school on Monday?”Jenny said even though she had no real authority to make such a decision, especially since the booth needed to be returned the next day. Judging by the way Tino kept looking at his friend while he talked on the phone, she had the feeling he was going to skip the dance to be with him. She wondered if they were going out, but it was hard to tell as they acted more like friends than lovers. Still, it was a pity they were not going to be there tonight as they would have gotten her vote for the cutest couple.
“Thanks,” Didi croaked out. He closed his eyes and put his head down on the table.
Jenny patted his shoulder. “I’m sorry you’re going to miss the fun, but don’t worry, I’ll tell you guys all about it on Monday.”
Didi made a soft sound of agreement.
“Thanks, Bernd. See you in a bit.” Tino hung up the phone. He turned to Jenny and gave it back to her. “His brother’s coming to get us.” Tino looked around at the gym. “If you need me to stay, I guess I can…”
“Nah! We’ll manage. See ya Monday!” She left to go supervise the DJ booth.
“Bernd’ll be here soon.” Tino sat down to wait.
Ten minutes later, Bernd and his girlfriend, Amber, strolled in the open gym door. Spotting Didi and Tino, they hurried over to them.
“You okay, Didi?”
He shook his head.
“Let’s go,” Amber said as they helped Didi up. “Sssh, Baby, it’ll be okay,” she said softly as they got him outside and in the car.
That night, Tino snuggled up to Didi as the lay in his bed, watching one of Didi’s favorite movies. He kissed Didi’s cheek. “I’m glad you got sick.”
“Yeah?” Didi looked at him like he had just sprouted another head.
Tino nodded. “Instead of sharing you with a room full of people and all the noise and trying to get you to dance with me and all,” he smiled, “I have you all to myself.”
“I see.”
“And that’s a good thing.”
“Yeah…”
