“I dare you to kiss him!” Bernd said to his little brother, Didi, as he pointed at Tino. Amber smacked him in the back of his head which made Didi laugh. He was not too sure about kissing Tino. Sure he kissed his father and his “Onkel Luigi” and sometimes Bernd would kiss him goodnight, but this felt different. Bernd was twelve and so grown up, and so was Amber, so maybe that’s why she smacked him?
Didi blushed when he realized Tino was staring at him like he was expecting him to kiss him. He swallowed and leaned in and kissed Tino’s check. He nearly died when Tino tried to kiss him back. Thankfully, he did not have time to dwell on what he had done as Amber was busy yelling at Bernd about it.
“Hey, Didi, wanna go play in the stable with the kittens?” Tino said. As much as he wanted to kiss Didi’s cheek, they were good friends after all, and his father always kissed his uncle on the cheek and they were good friends too, he wanted to go play. The fuss Amber and Bernd were making was so silly.
“Ummm… Okay.” He followed Tino to the stable. They went inside and looked for the kittens. Didi sat down next to Tino on a bale of hay and watched them play. After awhile, Tino started leaning on him. When Didi turned his head to tell him sit up, Tino kissed him on the lips. Didi pulled back, his cheeks a bright pink. He sputtered wordlessly at him.
Tino smiled. “That wasn’t so bad, so I don’t see why Amber and Bernd are fighting over it.” He shrugged. “It’s just a kiss.”
But it was my first kiss and Bernd said those are special… “Ummm… Yeah…” Didi gave him a tight little smile.
“Hey! Stop jumping on your brothers!” Tino got up, the kiss forgotten, and hunkered down by the kittens. He picked up the biggest one and carried it over to where he had been sitting. He put the kitten on his lap and stroked the soft fur until it was purring contentedly.
Didi also picked up a kitten and put it on his lap. The cute little brown tabby curled up and went to sleep in his lap. “What do you want to do?”
“I dunno? What do you wanna do?”
“I don’t know. We could go inside and see if lunch is ready. Or we could go climb a tree or something.”
“Okay!”
Putting the kittens back with their littermates, they left the stable. They ran around, chasing each other, when Tino started a game of tag. Their fight and the kiss forgotten, Amber and Bernd joined in the fun. After a while Amber’s twin brother, James, and Tino’s older brother, Cesare showed up. A new game of tag was started and they all played until lunch.
When it was time for Tino and his brother to go home, Tino kissed Didi’s cheek. “It’s how best friends say hello and goodbye,” he said softly to Didi.
“Yeah?”
Tino nodded.
Didi screwed up his courage and kissed his friend’s cheek. “Bye, Tino.”
“Bye, Didi!” Tino waved and scampered off after his brother and father.
Didi waved back. He turned to go back inside, when he saw Amber whack his brother upside the head again. He shot her a questioning look and she shook her head in reply. Shrugging, Didi went inside to read his book. As he went past them, he heard his brother say something about a kiss. I don’t know why Bernd keeps going on about it… It was just a kiss; no big deal… But it was nice…
