For COM… Happy Holidays!

The kettle let out a loud, shrill whistle. “I’m coming,” the Doctor grumbled as he hurried over to it. He switched it off and poured the hot water into the waiting teapot, warming it up. He poured that out and placed the loose tea filled infuser inside. The Doctor then poured the hot water from the kettle into the tea pot. While the tea brewed, he got out a delicate porcelain tea from a set one of his previous incarnations had acquired long ago or was it yesterday or even tomorrow? He shrugged and set out a couple of crumpets on a plate, before pouring some cream into the teacup.

Judging the tea to be at its perfectly brewed best, the Doctor poured himself a cup of tea. He also removed the infuser from the teapot. Placing everything on a tray, the Doctor carried it to his quarters. He sighed softly, thinking how quiet the TARDIS was now that Donna was gone. Sadly, that was for the best, he reminded himself.

Entering his quarters, the doctor walked over to the comfy chair in the corner. He set the tray down on the table next to it and sat down. Reaching for his cup of tea, the Doctor sipped it. “Perfect…” he said softly. He sat there, thinking about his companions. He missed them all to varying degrees, Rose and Donna especially, which led to thoughts of Elizabeth I, Nurse Joan Redfern, and his little Reinette, who he watched grow up before his eyes. He sighed sadly.

The Doctor shook his head. “No,” he said, as he tried to banish his melancholy thoughts. He drank his tea, draining the cup, and pouring himself another one. “I should travel alone.” He frowned. “Yes, that’s it, alone.”

My poor, sweet, lonely angel…

He closed his eyes, letting the memory of the sound of her voice wash over him.

My lonely angel…

He could feel her fingertips gently caressing his check as if she were there in reality and not a memory of a love long gone. The Doctor opened his eyes and set the teacup aside. He mentally chided himself for being a fool… a very old fool.

My poor, sweet, lonely angel… You shouldn’t be alone…

“I should; then others won’t get hurt.” The Doctor picked up the teacup and drank. The tea was lukewarm with a hint of bitterness, reflecting the shift in his mood. Bitterness quickly turned to anger at himself. He was so mad that he nearly crushed the teacup in his hand.

“Alright! Alright!” he growled. “You win! I promise not to give up and go about my business alone. Okay?” His expression softened when her memory came to mind. She was not as saucy as his beloved queens and theirs was a quiet love affair, all prim and proper. It was a bittersweet, “what if” moment and he hated breaking Joan’s heart, but he had to go.

Then there was Donna. She was his best friend and he wondered if things were different, would they have eventually fallen in love? The memory of her laughter rang in his head. The Doctor ruefully shook his head as he got up to clear away the remains of his tea. He could picture her standing there, scoffing at the idea of the two of them being more than friends. Chuckling, he looked forward to his next adventure. He figured if he was lucky, he might just find a new companion or two. Feeling better, he made his way to the main room in the TARDIS, eager to start his next adventure.
