Chloe stepped out of the elevator and into the penthouse. The door closed behind her as she strode into what passed for a foyer. “Lucifer?” She looked around. The place was dimly lit, although this time her partner, who was also her boyfriend, had set an ornate candelabrum on his baby grand piano. Chloe shook her head. The candelabrum held five lit candles. “How many times have I told him not to leave them unattended?” she huffed softly to herself. “Lucifer?” she called out, before blowing out the candles.

Stepping further into the penthouse, she saw the table he had set up. He had set the table with two place settings of fine china flanked by real silver flatware. “Only the best…” Chloe murmured as she picked up a fork, only to set it back down. Two more candles blazed around a beautiful floral centerpiece. Chloe rolled her eyes and blew them out. If she did not know any better, she could have sworn he was trying to burn the place down.

She strolled over to the raised platform that housed his bedroom. “Lucifer?” Chloe tried to look inside it, but it was hard to see more than a glimpse of his bed, between the stone pillars.

“Ah Detective… Chloe,” Lucifer corrected as he stepped out of the elevator, carrying a large gold box, and into his penthouse. “You’re early.”

Chloe turned around. “Lucifer.” A faint smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. Despite her mild annoyance over the candles and his absence when she had arrived, she was happy to see him. “Sorry…” she said as he approached. She felt her heartbeat quicken in a good way at his devilish smile.

“Where are my manners?” he held out the box. “This is for you.”

“Thanks,” Chloe said.

‘Go ahead, open it.” Lucifer turned and headed towards the large bar that dominated the one wall of the penthouse. He disappeared behind it, only to pop up seconds later, holding a cut crystal vase. “Open it.”

Chloe nodded. Balancing the box on one hand, she tugged at the white ribbon around the box, before lifting the top off. Inside, wrapped in tissue paper, which she hastily opened, were a dozen long stem roses. “They’re beautiful,” she said softly. “Thanks, Lucifer.”

He nodded at her. An awkward silence briefly settled between them, before he regained his composure. “Well, come on, Detective… Chloe, we need to put them in water.” He waved her over to the bar.

Chloe took a deep breath and slowly blew it out. She hated feeling like a teenager again, like she was going on her first date, well, it was a first date of sorts as a couple…

“Chloe!”

His voice pulled her from her reverie and she hurried over to him. Chloe watched as he pulled the roses out one by one, arranging them neatly in the vase. She felt as if she was noticing for the first time, his long, thin fingers. Her gaze traveled up his arms and across his shoulders, before landing on his face. He was beautiful, but then he was an angel, albeit a fallen one. Chloe felt her cheeks heating up.

“Something wrong?” Lucifer drawled, his eyes twinkling with a mix of mischief and amusement. He walked around the bar to stand next to her.

“No!” Chloe let her irritation at getting caught checking him out bleed into her voice. She frowned. I was just…”

“Tell me, Chloe,” Lucifer purred, “what is your deepest desire?” He licked his lips in anticipation, hoping she would actually tell him this time, despite being unable to, and that it would match his desire.

“I want…”Chloe breathed. “Oh no you don’t!” She narrowed her eyes at him. “Tell me, Lucifer,” she purred in perfect imitation of him, “What is your deepest desire?”

His salacious grin faltered and his expression softened as he considered his answer. “You.” He closed the distance between them. Cupping her cheeks, he whispered, “You… I desire you.”

Chloe closed her eyes as she melted into his touch. “Me too…” she breathed.

Lucifer cocked an eyebrow at that, before leaning in to kiss her. He loved the way she snaked her arms around him, pulling him close. Just as things were beginning to heat up, the elevator pinged open.

“Mr. Morningstar, your dinner is here,” a member of the Lux’s kitchen staff called out as he pushed the food cart out of the elevator. “Mr. Morningstar… oh!” The guy quickly backed up when he spotted his boss and what he assumed was his latest conquest. “Sorry, sir!” The elevator doors could not close fast enough in his humble opinion.

Lucifer sighed. The mood was broken, when Chloe hurriedly stepped away from him. He gestured towards the cart. “Dinner is served?” Lucifer smirked. He desperately wanted to lighten the mood.

Chloe nodded and headed towards the table. She waited for Lucifer to pull out the chair for her, before sitting down. Chloe pretended she could not hear him fussing with what she realized was supposed to be a romantic dinner for two. When he arrived at the table with the food cart, she said, “Do you have any matches?”

Lucifer pulled a Lux matchbook from his vest pocket and handed it to her. While he plated their diner, Chloe lit the candles on the table. She waited for him to sit down. “Thanks. It looks delicious.”

“It’s Wagyu beef and those are imported truffles,” he pointed out the items on the plate, “those are sweet potato fries. I know how much you like them.” He grinned at her. “However, I drew the line at beer battered onion rings.”

Chloe chuckled softly.

“What?” He stared at her, his brows knit together in a puzzled frown.

She laughed. “I’m sorry.” Chloe’s eyes twinkled in the candlelight. “Who told you I liked them?”

“Your spawn and Detective Douche agreed. Why?” He opened the wine and poured them each a glass.

“I thought so!” Chloe could not stop laughing.

“They tricked me, didn’t they?” Lucifer flashed a wry smile at her. “Well played.”

She nodded. “It’s okay, I’ll eat them.” Though she would have liked a baked potato or steak fries much better, Chloe speared one with her fork and ate it. “I appreciate the trouble you went through to ummm, ‘make’ them for me.”

Lucifer reached for his wine glass and sipped his wine. Things were looking up again. Judging by the way the conversation flowed between bites, he had a feeling Chloe thought so too. They decided to wait on dessert, and glass of wine in hand, they stepped onto the balcony.

Chloe leaned against him as they looked out at the view. Lucifer took the hint and put his arm around her. A companionable silence settled between them and when she looked up at him, he leaned in and kissed her. Chloe deepened it, surprising herself. In spite of herself, she had fallen in love with him and had missed him terribly when he had to go back to Hell. Now that he was back, she wanted to make up for lost time. If the look in his eyes, when they came up for air, was anything to go by, so did he and that left her feeling happier than she had felt in a long time.
