Lady Edwina Harrington stood in front of the full length mirror in her room. She smoothed the lines of her mourning gown, before patting her hair, which she had pulled into a chignon. She reached for her hat and placed it on her head, securing it with a hatpin. Edwina admired her reflection. She pinched her cheeks, trying to bring a bit of color to her face.
Sighing softly, she turned towards her dressing table. She walked over to it and picked up her black lace gloves. Edwina put them on. She grabbed the black shawl that lay over the back of the chair and picked up her reticule. Draping the shawl over her arm and placing her purse on her wrist, she picked up the black lace parasol that rested against the dressing table. She left her bedroom and headed downstairs.
One last glance in the hall mirror and Edwina was ready to leave her townhouse to go visit her friend Jessica. The two friends had planned on a walk in the park, followed by a light lunch at Jessica’s. Calling her housekeeper, Edwina told her not to expect her for lunch, before stepping out onto the street. Putting up her parasol, she headed to her friend’s house. Spotting a flower seller, Edwina bought a posy for her friend, before continuing on her way.
