For Prismatika, who gave me the shooting star prompt...
Didi dashed around the backyard with his best friend Tino, catching fireflies and putting them in an old mayonnaise jar. Hot and thirsty from running around, the two of them sat down on the porch steps with a glass of lemonade and a plate of cookies. While they enjoyed their snack, the boys watched the stars come out. A bright streak moved across the night sky.
“Look, Didi! A shooting star! Hurry up and make a wish!!” Tino closed his eyes and did just that.
Didi saw the meteor. He glanced over at his friend, and also closing his eyes, he made a wish.
“What’d ya wish for?” Tino said.
“I’m not telling or it won’t come true,” Didi said. He frowned at Tino. “What did you wish for?” He finished his lemonade.
Tino drank his lemonade. He smiled impishly. “Not telling!” He giggled and finished his lemonade. “Let’s go catch some more fireflies!”
Didi laughed as Tino could be so silly at times. “Okay!” He set his glass down and got up.
Tino also stood up, and grabbing the jar, he and his best friend raced around the backyard, the shooting star forgotten in favor of more fireflies. By the time Didi’s older brother, Bernd had returned from the movies with his friends Amber and her twin brother James, the boys’ jar had several fireflies inside.
After showing them off, Tino said to his friend, “Let’s let them go, Didi.”
“Okay.” Didi looked over at his brother and his friends. “Hey, Bernd, do you guys want to watch us let the fireflies go?”
Bernd looked at his friends.
“Sure,” Amber said.
The kids gathered around Didi as he unscrewed the lid to the jar. Counting softly to three in German, Didi removed the jar’s lid, setting the fireflies free. They flashed their lights several times as Didi held the jar on its side. The fireflies, upon reaching the opening, glowed as they took flight.
“Hey look, Didi!” Tino said. “Doesn’t that one look like a little shooting star?” He pointed to a firefly that flashed on its way to the ground.
“Yeah!”
“Did you make a wish?” the boys chorused. They looked at each other and laughed themselves silly as the others went inside.

Date: 2020-07-05 08:05 pm (UTC)Speaking of bugs... I saw lightening bugs last night! Dad & I went out for a lil walk & ended up on the main street, where we watched the fireworks (illegal here) that someone across the street & down the block were setting off. They cleared the businesses on the main street & it was cool to see. We sat at the bus stop. Some guy walked past & told us the buses weren't running. XD We watched for nearly an hour. I did have a couple of lightening bugs land on my head. XD
