Amber stood just outside the paddock, trying hard to look and not look at the same time. Her son Fritz was sitting astride Sausage, his Shetland pony, while his father, Bernd was mounting his big Friesian horse, Blitzkrieg. It was all part Fritz’s riding lessons and Bernd did promise to start off slow with a walk, but she still could not help feeling anxious about him falling off and getting hurt. It was one thing for Fritz to sit up on Blitzkrieg with his father and go riding; it was another for him to do so by himself. Before she could imagine the worst, Bernd’s voice pulled her back to reality.
“You ready?” Bernd said as he turned in the saddle to look at his son.
“Yup! Let’s go, Vati!” Fritz said. He wanted to go riding with his father, not sit there, doing nothing.
Bernd grinned. “Okay. Now, gently touch your heels to Sausage’s sides and let’s go!”
Fritz did just that and much to the six year old’s amazement, Sausage started forward. He laughed and waved at his mother. “Look, Mutti! I’m riding Sausage all by myself!!”
“I see, Sweetie! That’s great!” Amber smiled at him. She could feel herself beginning to relax.
“See? I told you he’s a natural like me!” Bernd grinned.
Amber rolled her eyes at him. “Yeah.” She watched them ride around the paddock for nearly an hour, before Fritz got tired and wanted to do something else. She led the pony to the stable, so they could remove his tack. Afterwards, he was let loose in the paddock ring with Blitzkrieg for the rest of the day. Amber smiled as she trailed along behind Fritz and Bernd. The two of them were busy talking about their horses and Fritz’s next lesson.
“When can I learn how to gallop, Vati?”
“After you learn how to canter,” Bernd said. “And that won’t be for a while, okay?”
Amber’s smile broadened into a grin as she was sure that last bit was for her. And with a bit of luck, Fritz would be a teen by the time that happened, if he did not decide to give up horseback riding long before that. Not that she was against Fritz learning to ride a horse, she was just afraid her baby would fall and get hurt. Quashing those images that danced in her head, Amber hurried after them.
