“WOW! You’re some pretty pirate, Willow!” Henry exclaimed as his girlfriend left his room, having changed into her pirate costume alone so she could surprise him. He waggled his eyebrows at his girlfriend, who had the left side of her skirts hiked up, exposing her stocking clad knee and the lower lacy leg of her knickers. “You really shiver my timbers!” He loved the way her tightly laced bodice accentuated her cleavage.
Willow felt her cheeks heating up as she rolled her eyes at him. She took her hat off and smacked him with it. “Foolish thing!” she huffed.
Henry grinned and pulled her close. “I mean it.” He nuzzled her cheek. “You always shiver my timbers,” he said, his voice low and husky, “no matter what you’re wearing or not wearing.” Henry kissed her neck. He was about to grind his hips against hers when she pushed him away.
Willow put her hat back on. She smoothed her skirts and straightened her bodice. “Henry Talbot, how many times do I have to tell you, I’m not getting nekkid outside and that includes skinny dipping and, I quote, rolling around in the rushes? If you’re good, I’ll think about it when we get back to your room, later. And if you’re really lucky, maybe I’ll pose for you so you can finish that mermaid you’re carving,” she said as she wagged her finger at him.
“Yes ma’am!” Henry grinned. A woodcarver by trade, he liked to make decorative pieces in his spare time. Before he had meet Willow, Henry used to employ the working girls from down on the docks, who would happily stand there and pose naked for him for a handful of coin. After she became his girlfriend, Willow was the one he now immortalized in wood as everything from a mermaid to wood nymph, including a Madonna for the new Church of the Holy Roman Emperor that was built for the new king’s queen, who was a devout member of the Church.
Grabbing his hat, Henry offered Willow his arm and together, the left his room above his workshop. Leaving the shop, they joined revelers heading towards the area near docks, where the Pirate Day festival was being held.
The closer they got to the docks, the stronger the mouthwatering smell of grilled fish and other meats filled the air. They stopped for a pint of ale and drank it as they browsed the various vendor stalls. Henry bought Willow a necklace made of sea glass, which he claimed matched her eyes.
They wandered around, joining a line of people, who were waiting to “kiss a mermaid” for a couple of coins. They entered a large tent, where a couple of Kittens lounged in a large tub of water, or “sunned” themselves on the “rocks,” which were nothing more than a couple of straw mattresses and feather pillows on top of a raised wooden platform. The Kittens were for all intents and purposes naked, wearing only a piece of fishnet tied around their hips that did little to hide their sex. It also explained the preponderance of men on the line waiting to get in.
“They’re nekkid!” Willow hissed at Henry when they got close enough to see the mermaids.
“So? They’re Kittens,” Henry said as if that explained everything.
“They’re still people and when they do their parade, they’re not nekkid!” she whispered back at him.
“Willow honey, the money they raise from their kisses will help feed the orphans. The sickness that swept through here this past spring left a lot of them.”
“I know, but still…”
“But nothing, my love.” Henry took her hand and kissed Willow’s fingers. “Just pay your fee, kiss the mermaid, and think about all the orphans you’ll help.”
“If you put it that way…” Willow sighed. When it was her turn she paid her fee and stepped over to the tub. One of the mermaids came over to her and waved. Willow took a deep breath, pursed her lips and closed her eyes. She moved in to kiss the mermaid’s cheek. The mermaid giggled as Willow kissed her.
“Let me kiss you properly,” the mermaid purred and before Willow could pull away, she cupped Willow’s cheeks and pulled her close, before kissing her on the lips.
Willow blushed as the men in the tent, along with the Kittens, cheered. She sputtered wordlessly
“Thank you so much!” the mermaid said. “You’ve helped a lot orphans today!” She smiled.
“Uh, you’re welcome.” Willows smiled wanly. “Come, Henry.” When he did not reply as he was busy kissing a mermaid, he thought had posed for him, she took her hat off and whacked him with it. “Let’s go! I think we’ve helped enough orphans for one day!” she said, much to everyone’s amusement. Blushing, she dragged her boyfriend out of the tent. “Come on! Let’s go watch the harbor races!” She stomped off.
“Oh, okay!” Henry followed his girlfriend to the docks. He knew she was more annoyed with being caught by surprise when the mermaid kissed her, than she was bothered by the nudity, or Henry kissing a naked girl. He resolved to do whatever it took to brighten her mood. He hoped a bite to eat would do the trick. “You want to try that new soup stand for lunch?”
“What?” Willow stopped and turned to face him.
“Do you want to try the new soup stand? I heard it has a clam chowder that’s good and the seafood bisque is to die for. They say it’s got real scallops and lobster in it. It sounded good and I thought you might like it.”
“Oh…” Willow smiled, her mood lifting the farther they got from the mermaid tent. She even giggled at the odd couple that wandered past. She thought she recognized the middle aged woman in overdone pirate dress, but the skinny guy that trailed after her, carrying a small keg, did not look familiar at all.
Henry laughed. “I see ol’ Agnes found herself another young buck to carry her keg!” He paused to watch as they disappeared into the crowd.
Willow giggled. “I thought that was her! I wonder what she says to get them to do her bidding.” She shrugged and continued on their way to the harbor.
Henry hurried after her. “I don’t know how she does it, but every year, she’s got a new guy to trail after her with a keg!”
“Yup!”
They pushed through the crowd to the harbor, and finding a good spot to watch the boat races, they sat down on the ground. They made friendly wagers between themselves, the winner getting a kiss. When the races were over, the two of them headed to the new soup stand for lunch, followed by watching the children’s parade. This year’s theme was sea monsters and a group of ten year old boys, who brought up the rear of the parade, had made a very convincing water dragon. Willow hoped they would win the costume contest as they had put a lot of work into their costume.
Once again, they found themselves sitting on the bank of the harbor, this time to watch the queen’s water parade. Rumor had it that one year, there was a group of real pirates in the parade and Willow wished she had seen it as it was supposedly a sight one would never forget. When the parade was over, Henry went to get them a bread bowl of fish stew for dinner and a couple of pints of ale. The food was good and his stomach full, Henry slept away the afternoon, his head cradled in Willow’s lap, while she watched people come and go.
Henry woke up as night fell. Some fireworks were set off, signaling the end of the festival. It went on for twenty minutes or so, much to everyone’s delight. When they ended a loud cheer went up. Henry and Willow got up and followed the crowd to the middle of town. From there, they slowly walked back to his place.
