Title: Getting the Baby to Sleep
Prompt: Sleeping on His/Her Shoulder
Fandom: Original
Characters: Amber, Bernd, Fritz
Word count: 391
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd finally gets little Fritz to sleep, but is afraid to move and needs Amber’s help…
Author’s Notes: Thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this for me. Please also note that Amber belongs to her.
For ELD, who gave me the prompt…
Bernd set the bottle down on the table next to the rocker. He carefully maneuvered his infant son Fritz, so that the fussy baby was resting on his left shoulder. He gently patted Fritz’s back the way Amber and Vati had shown him, until the baby burped. Bernd was glad he had remembered the burping cloth, when Fritz let out another loud burp. He cradled Fritz in his arms again and wiped his mouth, but the baby was not happy. Setting the cloth aside, Bernd position him on his shoulder again.
Fritz fussed a bit, although he seemed happier than he was when lying in his father’s arms. Bernd simply went with the flow, and propping his foot up against the rocker’s footrest, he slowly rocked back and forth. Little Fritz cooed happily when Bernd started singly softly to him. It wasn’t long before the baby had gone back to sleep, nestled against his father’s shoulder.
Unfortunately, as tired as he was, Bernd was afraid to get up, for fear of waking the baby. He sat there, rocking gently back and forth, while wondering how he was going to get Fritz back in his crib before he fell asleep, or woke him up like he did last night.
“Amber,” he whispered in a sing-song voice. “Oh, Amber. I need you…” He called out to her as loud as he dared to no avail. Either she did not hear him, or she was letting him handle things on his own. He really wished she would come and help him and as he tried to get up without disturbing Fritz and waking him up. “Amber!” he hissed.
She strolled in, half asleep, as if by magic. “What?” she said with a yawn. “Is he okay?” Worry over her newborn had Amber instantly awake.
“Yeah, he’s just asleep and I’m afraid of waking him up.”
“That’s it?” Amber sighed and carefully took the baby. She gently rocked him as she walked over to his crib. Amber laid him on his back and tenderly stroked his cheek with the back of her finger. She made soft cooing noises as she soothed her infant.
Bernd came over to watch her. He kissed Amber’s cheek. “Danke.”
“Bitte. Now let’s go back to sleep.”
Bernd grinned. “My thoughts exactly,” he said as they headed back to their room.
