Summary: Stella’s affinity for all things Gothic has her feeling like a poser…
Author’s note: Special thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this. Please also note that this was also written for Holiday Prompts Autumn: Images table.
Author’s note 2: Stella has “imposter syndrome” which is the experience of feeling like a phony—you feel as though at any moment you are going to be found out as a fraud—like you don't belong where you are, and you only got there through dumb luck. It can affect anyone no matter their social status, work background, skill level, or degree of expertise. Stella looked at the vignette she had set up on the grey, shabby chic dresser she had found in the Village and sighed. Hours spent watching Voltaire’s “Gothic Homemaking” on YouTube had resulted in one resin skull, a black candle, and bat-shaped neon light. She fussed with a cloud of “spider web” in a glass jar; she had found thrifting, trailing a bit of the web out of the jar to rest under the skull.
She bit her lip. It still did not look very gothic to her. Stella ran to the hall closet and rummaged through a box marked “Christmas” and pulled out a silk poinsettia. She cut off a couple of blossoms, and stacking them together, she had what looked like a Burton-esque, red flower. Stella put it next to the candle, which she had slid towards the skull. It kind of looked better, but she still was not happy. She loved the Goth aesthetic, dressing in blacks and greys, often with touches of red, purple, or white, but she always felt like a poser. Stella wondered if she was too happy; like her life was just too good to be dark, brooding, and emo about it, despite another favorite YouTuber Black Friday’s admonishments to just be herself.
Stella sighed as she set the cake plate down on the dresser. Six chocolate cupcakes sat on top of it. Stella had made them herself from a boxed cake mix and canned frosting. She had decorated them with a tube of white frosting and candy spiders she had found in Party City.
Checking the time on her phone, Stella noticed it was nearly time for her friends to “arrive.” Thanks to Covid-19, she and the friends she had made when she had transferred to the Fashion Institute of Technology were going to have a virtual Halloween party. She walked over to the table she had set up and smoothed the black table cloth. The dry ice in the ceramic cauldron lent a spooky vibe to the mismatched black and white china she had found in various thrift stores all over the City. Her silverware was just as mismatched, but at least the napkins matched the tablecloth.
Stella took one last look at her phone. It was time for the party to start. Stella got out her laptop and clicked on the Zoom meeting link. While she waited to be let in, she made a pot of pumpkin spice tea in the old teapot her grandmother had given her. She brought it to the table just in time to hear her friends greet her.
“Happy Halloween, everyone!” she said as she sat down. “Welcome to my humble abode.” Stella picked up her laptop and showed off her studio apartment. The oohs and aahs she got from her friends made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside. If they were impressed with her meager decorating skills, maybe she was not a poser after all. Feeling better about herself, Stella was able to enjoy their virtual party. She hoped next year they could all celebrate together in a really “spooktacular” way as she sipped her tea and chatted with her friends.
